Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 339 PM EDT Mon Oct 18 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will continue to build in from the west through Tuesday, then slide offshore mid to late week. A cold front pushes through late week, bringing a chance for precip.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/. As of 325 PM Mon . High pressure continues to build into the region from the west, providing clear skies and a dry airmass. Very efficient radiational cooling expected to take place once again as a result, with winds decoupling overnight. Lows dropping to the low 40s inland with coastal communities staying slightly warmer in the 50s. Not much concern for fog either given low dewpoints and dry profiles, though some shallow patchy steam fog can't be ruled out.

SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/. As of 330 PM Mon . Strong ridge of high pressure will move nearly overhead Tuesday. Clear skies and dry conditions will persist through the day with cool temps remaining in place. Aftn highs will over around the low to mid 70s across the board.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/. As of 230 AM Monday . Cool high pressure will build over the area through the middle of next week. A front will approach the area late in the week.

Tuesday night through Thursday . Upper ridging builds across the region through the middle of the week with sfc high pressure sliding offshore Wednesday into Thursday. Dry weather will prevail with mainly clear skies, seasonable temperatures, and comfortable dew points. The air mass moderates through mid week with return flow around the high offshore allowing highs to warm into the mid to upper 70s Wednesday and Thursday.

Friday through Sunday . A mid level shortwave and attendant cold front push across the area Friday with cyclonic flow aloft continuing into Saturday. Isolated to scattered showers possible Friday which may linger along the coast into Saturday. Upper level dynamics is somewhat limited but we are briefly in the right entrance region of the upper jet Friday with PW values increasing to around 1.5". Increased PoPs to chance area wide Friday afternoon and evening. The front is progged to push across the area late Friday night with high pressure building into the region Saturday into Sunday. Could see a few showers linger along the coast Saturday but otherwise dry conditions expected over the weekend.

AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Tuesday Morning/ . As of 155 PM Mon . High confidence VFR forecast through the period with strong high pressure continuing to build from the west. Forecast soundings show a very dry airmass in place. Not much of a fog concern tonight despite strong radiational cooling tonight as a result, though some isolated shallow steam fog cannot be completely ruled out. VFR conditions continue Tuesday as high pressure begins to shift overhead.

LONG TERM /Tuesday through Friday/ . As of 240 AM Monday . Pred VFR conditions with mainly clear skies expected through Thursday. A front approaches the area Friday with scattered showers expected which may bring periods of sub- VFR conditions.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /Through Tuesday/ . As of 335 PM Mon . High pressure will continue to build into the region tonight and into Tuesday. Stiff NW winds 15-20 kts will continue overnight before gradually diminishing to 5-10 kts Tuesday as high pressure moves closely overhead. Seas 3-4 ft across the central and northern waters tonight will diminish to around 3ft by Tue aftn. Southern waters will drop from 2-3 ft tonight down to 1-2 ft Tue.

LONG TERM /Tuesday night through Friday/ . As of 245 AM Monday . High pressure slides offshore Wednesday into Thursday. W to NW winds diminish to around 15 kt or less Tuesday night into Wednesday. The high slides offshore Wednesday afternoon with winds becoming SW, then increases to 10-20 kt Thursday afternoon into Friday as gradients tighten ahead of an approaching cold front. The front is currently progged to push across the waters late Friday night. Seas subside to 2-4 ft Tuesday and then 1-3 ft Tuesday night through Thursday, then build back to 2-5 ft late Thursday and Friday.
