Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 1220 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will continue over the region into early this week. A dry cold front will cross the middle of the week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/. As of 1005 PM Sun . Made further temperature adjustments downward and dropped all forecast winds to calm inland. Temperatures across all but immediate coastal locales have fallen into the 50s. Forecast otherwise in excellent shape as broad high pressure continues to meander over the southeastern CONUS.

Prev disc . Perfect day acrs ENC with dry/seasonably cool high pres continuing to ridge into the region. Temps have topped out into the mid/upr 70s, very near climo for last week of Sep. Excellent radiational cooling setup tonight with high overhead supplying skc skies and calm wind will lead to the coolest night of the season thus far. With afternoon TD's bottoming out in the upr 40s to around 50, have undercut MOS vals, which are typical several degrees too warm in these regimes. Lows should range from the upper 40s in the normally cool spots (DPL, OAJ, Croatan Game Lands, Phelps/Pungo Lakes region), to the 50s even on the beaches of the OBX as winds will be very light.

SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TODAY/. AS of 3 PM Sun . High pres edges off the South Atlantic coast on Mon, with winds becoming light swrly, bringing slow moderating warming to ENC. Highs will top out just above 80 in many locales, with beaches remaining in the 70s.

LONG TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/. As of 220 AM Sun . Strong ridge of high pressure lingers into the first half of the work week to bring a stretch of relatively quiet weather. A backdoor front will drop south midweek to bring another round of cool temps.

Monday and Tuesday . High pressure will move overhead Monday then slide offshore Tuesday. Generally dry conditions will persist as a result, but temps will gradually warm above climo each day as heights inc and SW flow returns, allowing aftn highs to return to the mid to upper 80s.

Wednesday through Thursday . Global models pointing at a mid level trough developing across the East Coast mid week, possibly bringing a backdoor front through the region late Wed. Trough turns into a cutoff low Thu, lingering across the NE. Main impact is much cooler air moving in Thu with persistent NErly flow behind the front, causing aftn highs to drop from the low to mid 80s Wed to upper 70s Thursday. Latest guidance excludes much shower activity along the front given a relatively dry profile.

Friday and Saturday . Global models begin to disagree with where this cutoff low will go at this point. ECMWF shows it becoming a more elongated trough again, dipping into the Mid Atlantic while the GFS lifts it over Nova Scotia. Sfc high pressure attempts to build into the region, but is dependent on where the mid level low will meander. Regardless, cooler temps are expected to prevail Friday with a bit of a mixed bag of outcomes for Sat.

AVIATION /04Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Tonight/ . As of 1220 AM Mon . Clear/calm conditions will lead to some patchy fog thru daybreak with PGV best potential for pds of sub VFR. Outside of the threat for fog expect continued VFR thru period with skies remaining clear and winds light as high pres dominates.

LONG TERM /Tue through Thursday/ . As of 225 AM Sun . Dry high pressure will continue through Wednesday, providing an extended period of VFR conditions. A frontal boundary will approach the region from the north late Wed and push through Wed night into Thursday, turning winds Nrly.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /through Tonight/ . As of 3 PM Sun . With high pres building closer tonight the nrly winds will grad diminish to less than 10 kts. Seas of 3 to 4 feet this eve will subside to 2 to 3 ft overnight. Winds become srly by Mon afternoon as high slides offshore but remain only in the 5-10 kt range.

LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/ . As of 225 AM Sun . High pressure overhead Monday will shift offshore Monday night and Tuesday, turning light and variable winds Monday to more SWrly across the waters Tuesday, inching up to 10-15 kts by the aftn. Winds surge a little Tue night, up to 20 kts, ahead of a backdoor front that will approach the northern and central waters by Wed, turning winds Nrly around 10-15 kts through Thu. Seas 2-3 ft Monday and Tuesday gently rise to 2-4 ft behind the front Wed and Thu.
