Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 312 AM EDT Sat Oct 16 2021

SYNOPSIS. A strong cold front will approach from the west this morning and cross later this afternoon and evening. High pressure will build in from the west tonight through the middle of next week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/. As of 225 AM Sat . High pressure conts near the coast with cold front west of mtns. Expect light enuf winds for patchy fog thru daybreak. Will be mostly sunny and warm thru midday ahead of the front with highs well into the 80s inland. The front will reach deep inland areas mid to late aftn and quickly push E toward cst by 00Z. Bkn band of shra and a few tsra expected with the front and ramp pops up to high chc or likely inland late today. Will likely be a few hrs of gusty NW winds directly behind the front.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/. As of 225 AM Sat . The strong front will quickly sweep offshore by mid evening with sct to numerous shra and isold tsra coast quickly ending. Good cold/dry advection will follow the front with clearing skies overnight and lows reaching upr 40s/lower 50s deep inland to mid/upr 50s OBX. NW winds will be gusty thru the night coast.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. As of 245 AM Fri . Cool high pressure will build over the area Sunday through the middle of next week. A front will approach the area late in the week.

Sunday through Monday night . A cold front will push well offshore early Sunday with high pressure building in from the west. Meanwhile, the upper trough axis will slide offshore Sunday with NW flow developing aloft bringing downslope flow and a very dry airmass with PW values dropping to around 1/3" and generally clear skies. Temps will be 5-10 degrees below normal with highs generally in the mid to upper 60s Sunday and upper 60s to lower 70s Monday. Lows will be the coolest of the season with low to mid 40s inland to around 50 along the coast.

Tuesday through Friday . Weak ridging builds across the region through the middle of the week with sfc high pressure sliding offshore. Dry conditions will continue but will see gradually moderating airmass with temps warming to near or slightly above temps. A front approaches the area Friday and could see a few showers develop on Friday but moisture appears limited at this time and will limit PoPs to slight chance to low end chance.

AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Tonight/ . As of 1245 AM Sat . Tricky fcst thru daybreak with guidance all over the place with potential for fog. NAM shows widespread IFR or worse with majority of other guidance showing very little. With weak high pres near cst winds currently light and may decouple at times thru daybreak and this could lead to fog as already seen at OAJ. When brz picks up fog will likely dissipate . wl handle with tempo thru daybreak. Whatever fog forms will quickly dissipate after sunrise with VFR thru mid to late aftn as cold front approaches. Front will cross late aftn and early evening with band of shra/poss tsra that could briefly reduce vsbys, NW winds will likely be gusty for a period right after front crosses. VFR returns early to mid evening as front pushes quickly offshore with clearing skies overnight and NW winds mainly 5 to 15 kts.

LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday/ . As of 3 AM Saturday . Pred VFR conditions with mainly clear skies expected through the long term. CAA behind a departing front will bring NW wind gusts around 15-20 kt on Sunday, otherwise winds expected to remain below 15 kt.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /Through Tonight/ . As of 225 AM Sat . High pres along the coast early will slide offshore thru aftn as strong cold front approaches from the W. Light winds will become SSW 15 to 20 kts thru mid aftn with seas 2 to 3 ft building to 3 to 4 ft. The front will sweep thru late aftn and early evening with abrupt wind shift to NW and rapid increase in speeds to 20 to 30 kt. Only change to headlines was to start a cpl hours earlier few zones based on timing of front. Good CAA will cont thru the night behind the front with NNW winds 20 to 30 kt. Seas will build to 5 to 6 ft behind the front tonight.

LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday/ . As of 310 AM Saturday . CAA will continue Sunday and Monday and high pressure builds in behind the departing front. NW winds around 15-25 kt with gusts up to 30 kt Sunday morning will diminish to around 10-20 kt Sunday night into Monday. Seas around 4-6 ft Sunday morning subsides to 3-5 ft Sunday afternoon. Seas could build back up to 6 ft across the waters north of Ocracoke later Sunday night into Monday morning and will continue the SCA north of Ocracoke into mid-morning Monday. High pressure builds in for the middle of next week and expect NW to W winds mainly less than 15 kt Tuesday becoming W to SW Wednesday and seas mainly around 2-3 ft.
