Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC 718 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cool and Dry high pressure builds in across the southeastern United States today. This high pressure will remain in place tomorrow before a second cold front approaches late Saturday. This frontal passage is expected to be dry and weak. High pressure builds back into the region behind the dissipating front Sunday into early next week. Overall we can expect a pleasant end to the week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/. As of 715 PM EDT Thursday: Sat pix show some lingering stratocu across the mountains and foothills. Expect this to diminish overnight. Low end gusty winds across the mountains should also diminish this evening. Some guidance suggesting mountain valley fog developing overnight. However, the chance of this looks low, so kept out of the forecast for now. The center of surface high pressure slowly builds into the area through the period with cool and dry air remaining in place. Lows will be 10 to 15 degrees below normal, but shouldn't be cold enough to produce frost except over the very highest of elevations. Lighter winds expected Friday, but still plenty of sunshine. Highs will be around 5 degrees below normal.

SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/. As of 130 PM Thursday: Picture-perfect weather is in store for the first weekend of fall thanks to sfc high pressure leading to cool and dry conditions. A weak and unimpressive cold front tracks across the region late Saturday into early Sunday as a low pressure system tracks out of Midwest/OH valley region into the northeastern CONUS. This FROPA will have limited moisture so the only "impacts" from this frontal boundary will be a slight increase in winds and cloud cover. The front is expected to dissipate as it sinks across the forecast area early Sunday. High pressure builds back in quickly behind the diminishing front Sunday. NW'ly to W'ly flow in place will lead to pleasant temps through the weekend. Low temps remain below normal through the short term. High temps will be below normal Saturday becoming near/above normal Sunday.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. As of 130 PM Thursday: Sfc high pressure keeps us dry into early next week. Middle of next week, global models show a cold front tracking across the southeastern CONUS out of the Ohio Valley/Midwest. This could bring rain chances back into the forecast. The GFS and Canadian show limited moisture available with this FROPA, so this would limit PoPs. The ECMWF shows more moisture available with the front meaning there would be a higher chance for PoPs. Since models are not in good agreement regarding the moisture content associated with the FROPA, kept the majority of the CWA dry for the middle of next week as confidence on PoPs is low. Did introduce a slight chance for isolated PoPs Wednesday afternoon for the extreme northern CWA in coordination with neighboring WFOs. Sunday night lows remain below normal becoming above normal next week. High temps stay above normal through the period.

AVIATION /23Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. At KCLT and Elsewhere: The center of high pressure slowly builds into the area through the period with cool and dry air. Some VFR stratocu continues to linger along and near the mountains. Otherwise, clear skies expected. Some guidance suggests mountain valley fog develops overnight, but have kept it out of the KAVL TAF for now. Gusty NNW wind at KAVL should diminish through the evening. Light northerly wind expected elsewhere. NE wind picks up with mixing outside of the mountains Friday morning, then drops off during the afternoon. KAVL will see lighter NNW wind Friday.

Outlook: VFR conditions will persist into early next week. However, mountain valley fog will become more likely.
