Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 158 PM EDT Mon Oct 18 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will continue to build in from the west through Tuesday, then slide offshore mid to late week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/. As of 955 AM Mon . Fcst on track no changes planned.

Prev disc . High pres will cont to build in from the W with very dry air continuing across region. Expect sunny skies to cont and after a cool start shld see highs 70 to 75 mainland and upr 60s/around 70 OBX as thicknesses increase a bit.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM TUESDAY/. As of 225 AM Mon . The high will build closer with cont mainly clr skies. Excellent radiational cooling again inland with lows 40 to 45. Breeze will keep beaches warmer with most holding in the 50s.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. As of 230 AM Monday . Cool high pressure will build over the area through the middle of next week. A front will approach the area late in the week.

Tuesday through Thursday . Upper ridging builds across the region through the middle of the week with sfc high pressure sliding offshore Wednesday into Thursday. Dry weather will prevail with mainly clear skies, seasonable temperatures, and comfortable dew points. The air mass moderates through mid week with return flow around the high offshore allowing highs to warm from the low to mid 70s Tuesday into the mid to upper 70s Wednesday and Thursday.

Friday through Sunday . A mid level shortwave and attendant cold front push across the area Friday with cyclonic flow aloft continuing into Saturday. Isolated to scattered showers possible Friday which may linger along the coast into Saturday. Upper level dynamics is somewhat limited but we are briefly in the right entrance region of the upper jet Friday with PW values increasing to around 1.5". Increased PoPs to chance area wide Friday afternoon and evening. The front is progged to push across the area late Friday night with high pressure building into the region Saturday into Sunday. Could see a few showers linger along the coast Saturday but otherwise dry conditions expected over the weekend.

AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Tuesday Morning/ . As of 155 PM Mon . High confidence VFR forecast through the period with strong high pressure continuing to build from the west. Forecast soundings show a very dry airmass in place. Not much of a fog concern tonight despite strong radiational cooling tonight as a result, though some isolated shallow steam fog cannot be completely ruled out. VFR conditions continue Tuesday as high pressure begins to shift overhead.

LONG TERM /Tuesday through Friday/ . As of 240 AM Monday . Pred VFR conditions with mainly clear skies expected through Thursday. A front approaches the area Friday with scattered showers expected which may bring periods of sub- VFR conditions.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /Through Tonight/ . As of 625 AM Mon . No changes planned with moderate NW winds cont thru period.

Prev disc . NW winds will cont at 15 to 20 kts into the morn with a few gusts 20 to 25 kt. With buoys all showing seas 4 to 5 ft N will end the SCA. As the high builds closer later today and tonight winds will diminish a bit to 10 to 20 kts. The offshore flow and diminishing speeds shld enable seas to drop to 2 to 4 ft N and 1 to 3 ft S this aftn and cont in that range tonight.

LONG TERM /Tuesday through Friday/ . As of 245 AM Monday . High pressure becomes centered across the waters Tuesday, then slides offshore Wednesday into Thursday. W to NW winds diminish to around 15 kt or less Tuesday into Wednesday. The high slides offshore Wednesday afternoon with winds becoming SW, then increases to 10-20 kt Thursday afternoon into Friday as gradients tighten ahead of an approaching cold front. The front is currently progged to push across the waters late Friday night. Seas subside to 2-4 ft Tuesday and then 1-3 ft Tuesday night through Thursday, then build back to 2-5 ft late Thursday and Friday.
