Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 119 AM PST Fri Jan 28 2022

SYNOPSIS. Gusty north winds will linger in the Colorado River Valley today before gradually decreasing this weekend. Another cold front will push through the region early to mid next week, bringing another round of cooler temperatures and gusty winds.

SHORT TERM. through Sunday night. Early morning satellite loop showed clear skies areawide, with cirrus approaching from the west. Surface obs showed gusty north winds continuing in the wind prone areas, very low dewpoints which were advected in by the north winds, and seasonably chilly temperatures. The gusty north winds will linger at least through the morning and perhaps early afternoon in the Colorado River Valley, and the Lake Wind Advisory there looks good. Once the winds settle down this evening, relatively quiet weather can be expected through the weekend. The first batch of cirrus mentioned above will pass through the region today and tonight, followed by thicker clouds Saturday and Saturday night associated with a very weak area of low pressure passing by, followed by clearing skies on Sunday. Breezy north winds will continue in the Colorado River Valley, although not as strong as today. High temperatures today will be within a few degrees of Thursday, generally a bit lower in the valleys and nearly the same or a bit warmer in the exposed and higher elevation areas. Expect a little more warming at the upper elevations Saturday with little change in the valleys, followed by more warming in the valleys Sunday as the clouds clear out.

LONG TERM. Monday through Thursday.

The NBM has trended slower in bringing cooler conditions to the area next week with temperatures now forecast to stay mild and near to slightly above normal Monday and Tuesday. The cooler air and gusty north winds arrive behind a cold front that is forecast to sweep south through the area Tuesday night and Wednesday . dialing back temperatures by around 10 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. Gusty north winds are forecast across much of the area on Wednesday with the tightened gradient lingering into Thursday for enhanced winds in the Colorado River Valley. Keep in mind, this remains a low confidence forecast both for timing of the enhanced wind and the arrival of the cooler air due to continued shifting of the pattern. Clusters support a lower confidence forecast for the upcoming trough and its associated impacts but also mostly agree with a pattern shift to high pressure building off the west coast late next week. This could, once again, open the door for upstream shortwaves dropping south into our area.

AVIATION. For Harry Reid . Wind will continue to favor a north to northeasterly direction through much of Friday. Expect sustained northeast winds around 8-10 knots with occasional gusts to 12-15 knots Friday afternoon. Winds will relax this evening around 03-04Z Saturday, becoming light and favoring a southwesterly direction. Some passing high clouds will move in from the west later today, with more increased cloud cover expected over the weekend.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California . Breezy north winds will continue across the Lower Colorado River Valley, with gusts around 20-30 knots through Friday afternoon. Occasional breezes from the north to northeast will be possible Friday afternoon across southern NV. Further west, winds will be weaker, favoring typical diurnal directions. North breezes at KIFP and KEED will continue to linger through the weekend. Some passing high clouds will move in from the west later today, with more increased cloud cover expected over the weekend.
