Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Norman OK 219 AM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021

. New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM .

SHORT TERM. (Today and tonight) Issued at 216 AM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021

A mid-level trough will start to move into the Southern Plains today. Attendant southerly surface flow should persist through the short term, bringing in low to mid 50s dewpoints across the area. This will limit any elevated fire across the area today. Temperatures today should be in the low 90s, and lows tonight in the mid 60s across Oklahoma.

LONG TERM. (Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 216 AM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021

Warmer temperatures will return on Tuesday as the aforementioned mid-level trough continues to move into the area. In fact, temperatures will be in the low 90s Tuesday, which is roughly 10-15 degrees above average for late September. By Tuesday afternoon, strong to marginally severe storms are possible in western Oklahoma and parts of western north Texas. Storms are expected to form along a dryline that will be draped across western Oklahoma and western north Texas. The LLJ will increase Tuesday evening, which will help foster 30-40 kts 0-6 km bulk shear, in addition to sufficient instability for a few marginally severe storms.

The synoptic pattern will change in the mid week as another mid- level trough across the the Desert Southwest becomes more open, with southwest flow aloft over the area. As this wave approaches, increasing large scale ascent will overspread the area. By Thursday afternoon, a cold front will move in from Kansas, bringing in additional (and much needed) rainfall. Rain will linger through the week and into the weekend. Most places could see 1-2 inches this week with the multiple rounds of rainfall. Cooler temperatures are also on the way with all of the rainfall this week. Temperatures will be around average through the long term.

AVIATION. (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1033 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

VFR conditions will continue. Gusty south wind will decrease overnight. LLWS is expected at PNC and SWO tonight before surface winds increase from the south during the day Monday.

UPPER AIR. Issued at 1200 PM CDT Fri Sep 24 2021

No upper air flights are planned at this time.
