Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 415 PM PDT Thu Sep 23 2021

UPDATE. Updated AIR QUALITY ISSUES section.

SYNOPSIS. Continued dry conditions, above average temperatures, and periods of smoke will persist through the weekend. A cooling trend will commence on Monday and continue through at least the middle of next week as our temperatures fall below average. There is also a slight chance of showers in the higher elevations of the Sierra, along with increasing winds in Kern County.

DISCUSSION. A weak trough passing through the region has lowered our temperatures generally between 3 to 6 degrees compared to this same time yesterday. However, more pronounced cooling is apparent along the foothills in Tulare and Kern Counties due to all the smoke from KNP Complex and Windy wildfires. Like my fellow coworker, I too feel like a piece of beef jerky or brisket sitting in a smoker. This smoke across the valley will become thicker tonight through all of tomorrow as winds turn to an easterly direction. The Air Quality Alert issued by the San Joaquin Valley Pollution Control District will remain in effect through Monday.

For tomorrow, short-term ensembles and the deterministic model solutions all indicate that the ridge situated over the eastern Pacific will expand over the region, while a weak cutoff low sits over SoCal. As the ridge expands over the area, high temperatures will increase between 3 to 6 degrees compared to today, and will be up to 10 degrees above average. On Saturday, the ridge slightly weakens as the cutoff low remains over SoCal. Temperatures throughout the district will tumble a few degrees but will still remain above average.

By Sunday, the cutoff low over SoCal moves east as a deeper trough of low pressure drops into the PacNW. This deeper trough will start to break down the ridge, further lowering 500mb heights. Temperatures on Sunday will fall an additional 2 to 4 degrees, but will still remain slightly above average. Ensembles are coming into better agreement with the evolution of the aforementioned trough, which is progged to remain over the western U.S through at least next Wednesday. Confidence in precipitation is still low, but guidance still shows that there is a 20% chance of showers in the higher elevations of the Sierra. There is greater confidence in seeing below average temperatures across the district and strong winds in Kern County from Monday through the end of the forecast period.

AVIATION. In the San Joaquin Valley, the foothills and higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada, areas of MVFR visibilities can be expected due to smoke and haze with local IFR visibilities persisting in the vicinity of wildfires in the Tulare county mountains during the next 24 hours. Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail for the next 24 hours.
