Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 925 AM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cold front will slowly cross the region today and move offshore tonight. High pressure will build in late this week and continue into early next week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/. As of 925 AM Thu . The cold front was currently located over the NC coastal plain just west of a Washington to Jacksonville line. Well ahead of the front, a dissipating line of convection was moving across the Outer Banks and should be offshore by noon. Diurnal heating should result in redevelopment of showers and thunderstorms ahead of and in vicinity of the sluggish moving cold front the remainder of today with locations east of Highway 17 having the best chance for additional rainfall today. The front is forecast to be along or just off of the Outer Banks around 0Z which would end the threat for measurable rainfall for much of the area outside of the immediate coast this evening. With PW values AOA 2" some very heavy downpours are expected, especially along the coast and localized minor flooding will be possible. Clouds and rain will keep temps mainly in the upr 70s well inland with lower 80s cst.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM FRIDAY/. As of 225 AM Thu . The cold front will be over the OBX early this evening and finally push off the coast overnight. Areas generally W of Highway 17 shld be dry thru the night . sct to numerous shra OBX early will diminish behind the front but will cont with chc overnight as deeper moisture is slow to depart. With cool/dry advection and clearing skies inland areas will see lows in the 50s, clouds will keep the cst in the 60s.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. As of 215 AM Thu . Strong ridge of high pressure builds into the region late week and lingers into next week to bring a stretch of relatively cool and quiet weather.

Friday through Sunday . A cool and dry airmass builds into the region, ushering in a weekend of comfortable fall-like weather. High temps will be just below or near climo, gradually warming from upper 70s Fri to low 80s by Sun. Temps will cool off well overnight, bringing lows down to the low to mid 50s inland and mid to upper 60s along the coast.

Monday through Thursday . High pressure will move overhead early next week before sliding SE by midweek. Generally dry conditions will persist as a result, but temps will gradually warm above climo each day as heights inc, allowing aftn highs to return to the mid 80s. Models diverge dramatically by Thu, causing quite a bit of uncertainty with Euro showing upper lvl trough developing over the Mid Atlantic Coast as part of an omega block over the continental US while GFS showing persistent high pressure over the Eastern US.

AVIATION /13Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Tonight/ . As of 635 AM Thu . Tricky fcst conts ahead of front with cigs bouncing all sites between IFR and VFR. That trend will cont next several hrs as front crosses. From mid day on conditions will quickly improve as drier air spreads in with clouds lifting and sct out. Expect VFR to cont tonight with mclr skies over bulk of the taf sites. There is some potential for patchy fog if low lvl moisture doesn't lower enuf before sunset but for now will lean toward guidance with no fog.

LONG TERM /Fri through Monday/ . As of 230 AM Thu . Dry high pressure builds into the region late week through the end of the TAF period, providing an extended period of VFR conditions.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /through Tonight/ . As of 925 AM Thu . Breezy S to SW winds 15 to 25 kt early will slowly diminish over the Sounds this afternoon as a slow moving cold front approaches and begins to reach coast early this evening. The front will slowly push offshore tonight with winds grad become NW to N all wtrs mainly 10 to 20 kts. Seas of 5 to 7 feet this morning will subside to 4 to 6 feet later today and 3 to 5 ft tonight. SCA will end for sounds and rivers by noon and cstl wtrs this evening into tonight.

LONG TERM /Fri through Monday/ . As of 230 AM Thu . Cold front will continue inching offshore Fri with a stiff Nrly wind in its wake, blowing 15-20 kts before gradually subsiding by Fri night to 10-15 kts, down to 5-10 kts by Sat aftn. High pressure then builds into the region, providing fair marine conditions for the rest of the weekend and into early next week. Winds will remain light around 5-10 kts from the N, turning more WSW Sun into Mon. Seas generally 3-5 ft Fri before dropping to 2-4 ft Sat thru Mon.
