AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Morristown TN 1030 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

UPDATE. MORNING UPDATE.

DISCUSSION.

Light returns on radar brushing northern areas are associated with weak short wave energy moving by to our north. Obs show nothing but some mid clouds and precip not reaching the ground. Current forecast looks to be on track with more clouds north than central/south but overall plenty of sunshine and a seasonably warm afternoon. Will just make some minor adjustments to sky cover, primarily bumping up a bit north, and tweak temps and dew points with this update.

AVIATION. 12Z TAF DISCUSSION.

Fog in the vicinity of terminals will lift and dissipate by around 13z with VFR conditions, a mostly clear sky, and light WSW winds this afternoon. Valley fog is expected to develop again late in the period in the vicinity of TAF sites.

PREV DISCUSSION. /ISSUED 304 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021/ SHORT TERM . (Today and Tonight) .

Key Messages:

1. Fog this morning near river valleys and lakes.

2. Mostly sunny, seasonable, and dry today with light WSW winds.

3. Redevelopment tonight of fog near river valleys and lakes.

Discussion:

WV imagery this morning shows a highly amplified ridge across the lower Mississippi Valley NNW through the Great Plains. Longwave troughing extends across the US East Coast with an embedded shortwave moving ESE across southern OH. This is resulting in a few high clouds across the forecast area, but otherwise, mostly clear conditions are present with surface ridging in control of our weather. Locals obs sites and GOES-16 Night Fog imagery show extensive fog developing within our river valleys and near area lakes. After sunrise, this fog is forecast to quickly dissipate by 14z.

High pressure remains in control across the entire Southeast CONUS with light WSW winds expected across our area around the northern periphery of this surface ridge. Overall, not expecting the weather pattern to deviate much from Monday. Upper and low-level heights are forecast to be near or just slightly lower today than on Monday, so have went with temperatures near observed Monday max values, near normal for this time of year.

With high pressure, a clear sky, and light winds, more valley fog near rivers and lakes is likely tonight. A back door cold front will approach SW VA late tonight into Wednesday morning from the NE. With limited moisture across the region and mid to upper level NW flow ahead of this front, dry weather is forecast to prevail.

JB

LONG TERM . (Wednesday through Tuesday) .

Key Messages:

1. Dry weather and near normal temperatures expected for much of the long term forecast.

2. An increasing chance for showers over the weekend into next week.

Discussion:

In the upper levels, a ridge will be over the Southeast and Ohio River Valley. This weekend and into early next week a broad trough will move into the region. At the surface, high pressure will be over the Eastern U.S. This weekend, with southerly low level flow and weakening high pressure, increasing moisture will bring a chance for afternoon showers Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. With increasing moisture, increasing cloud cover is also expected this weekend into early next week. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s through the workweek. This weekend and early next week highs will be cooler in the upper 70s and lower 80s due to increasing clouds and showers.
