Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 300 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will remain just offshore today, as a cold front approaches from the north. This dry cold front will push through the region Wednesday morning followed by high pressure building in from the northwest through this weekend.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/. As of 210 AM Tues . High pressure continues over the area early this morning, centered just off the NC coast. A clear and quiet night will persist, with a light breeze keeping temps milder than the previous few nights. Currently temps remain in the low to mid 60s inland, and the low to mid 70s along the coast. Expect lows to reach the upper 50s to low 60s over the coastal plain and in sheltered locations closer to the coast, while areas along the coast remain in the upper 60s to low 70s.

High pressure will sink slightly to the SE today as a cold front approaches from the north. The pressure gradient between the two will cause winds to increase through the afternoon, especially along the coast, at around 15-25 mph. Otherwise it will be another clear and sunny day, and with low level thicknesses up some from yesterday, expect highs to reach the mid to possibly upper 80s inland, and the mid 80s along the coast.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/. As of 210 AM Tues . Moderate SW winds will continue right ahead of a mostly dry cold front tonight. The breeze and some increase in clouds will keep temps mild, with lows only reaching the mid to upper 60s inland, and low to mid 70s along the coast. There is a small chance that some leftover convection along the front may make it to the NOBX before dissipating, but most of the high res guidance keeps the area dry, so have taken out any chance of precip overnight.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. As of 3 AM Tue . A backdoor front will drop south midweek to bring another round of seasonably cool temps. Reinforcing sfc high pressure builds in from the north to keep temps seasonable through the weekend.

Wednesday and Thursday . 28/00Z global models cont to indicate East Coast will be under influence of lee side trough, with a dry cold front moving through during the day Wed. This will act to knock thicknesses/hts back to around climo, with seasonably cooler air mass building in. TD's also take a tumble, so overnight lows will be fairly cool, mainly in the 50s (60s beaches).

Friday through Monday . Hts begin to rise, with sfc high pres moderating over the region but remaining stationary, so stretch of dry weather will cont with no rain expected. Temps will climb to around 80 for highs by the weekend, but the dry air mass in place will keep temps cool at night, continuing in the low/mid 50s interior to low 60s beaches.

AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Early Wednesday Morning/ . As of 210 AM Tues . VFR conditions are expected through the TAF period, thanks to high pressure offshore. Dry air in the low and mid levels will keep skies cloud free until through at least the first half of tomorrow night. After that a dry cold front will push south through the region Wednesday morning, bringing some clouds, but keeping conditions at VFR levels.

LONG TERM /Wed through Sat/ . As of 3 AM Tue . VFR SKC will cont through Sat. A dry frontal boundary pushing through the region Wed, turning winds N but remaining relatively light.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /Today and Tonight/ . As of 210 AM Tues . Good boating conditions are expected through today, with worsening conditions expected tonight as winds and seas increase ahead of a cold front.

Winds are expected to be mostly SW 10-15 kts today, but will be increasing during the late afternoon hours to SSW 15-20 kts. Winds will peak just before midnight at 15-20 kts, with some gusts to 25 kts possible. Due to the marginal and brief nature of the gusty winds, no Small Craft Advisory will be issued at this time. Seas will be 2-3 ft this morning, and then increase to 3-4 ft late this afternoon, and then to 4-5 ft overnight.

LONG TERM /Wednesday through Saturday/ . As of 3 AM Tue . Winds turn nrly but will remain below sca on Wed behind dry cold front. Winds remain generally nerly through the weekend with speeds 5-15 kt. Seas a general 2-4 ft through Friday.

Large swell from distant Hurricane Sam will generate long period 6-7 ft seas this weekend. WW10 and NWPS performing poorly with generating this swell, so relied on NBM guide for the weekend.
