Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 600 PM EST Tue Nov 30 2021

SYNOPSIS. Mostly dry conditions continue this week as high pressure remains to the south, with a series of shortwaves passing to the north.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. As of 600 PM Tue . Quiet, dry weather will continue overnight as high centered over the Gulf Coast extends northeast into the western Atlantic underneath deep west-northwesterly flow. Another overnight period of mostly clear skies and very light to calm winds points to yet another excellent radiational cooling regime. Yesterday's low temperatures exceeded the coolest guidance by a hefty margin and expect the same for Wed morning. Even then, with WAA aloft it will not be nearly as cold but inland locales should touch freezing, with 40s for OBX.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/. As of 315 PM Tue . Pleasant conditions continue into Wednesday with high pressure shifting offshore as weak wave of low pressure and associated warm front rapidly transits the OH River Valley and Gulf States ahead of a mid-level shortwave. Only impact for our area tomorrow will be increasing high level clouds late. Continued WAA and 850mb temps rising to +6 to +8 C point to climatologically normal highs in the low to mid 60s.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/. As of 330 AM Tuesday .

Quiet pattern continues to start the long term as eastern NC resides on the western side of a surface high pressure resulting in warmer and drier conditions for the middle of the week with temperatures rising in to the mid 60s Wednesday and Thursday and approaching the low 70s Friday and Saturday. During this time frame chances for precipitation look very slim. As a 500 mb trough axis rotates through on Thursday there could be some shower development offshore but looks like at this time it will remain offshore with the OBX having the best chance of seeing a passing shower or two.

Over the weekend and into early next week, confidence in the forecast had been extremely low as solutions diverged and the spread in the models was high. The latest run of the EC however has seemingly come more into line with the GFS although timing differences remain as well as the handling of a fairly significant low pressure system over the northeastern CONUS on Monday along with its attendant cold front stretching down the eastern seaboard. The upshot for sensible weather remains the same for NC however regardless of the evolution of the low to the north. Temperatures will remain very warm through Saturday before dropping back into the upper 50s to low 60s on Sunday and Monday. Some coastal shower development will be possible Sunday night into Monday but aside from that, looks like another low moisture frontal passage for early next week, which wont do much to help worsening drought conditions over the eastern portion of the state.

AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. SHORT TERM /through Wednesday/ . As of 600 PM Tue . High pressure continues over the area producing mostly clear skies and light winds with VFR conditions prevailing through Wed across eastern NC. Airmass is too dry to support fog despite strong radiational cooling overnight.

LONG TERM /Wed night through Sunday/ . As of 330 AM Tuesday . VFR conditions expected through the period with very little chance for precipitation at the main terminals. OAJ and EWN would be the most likely to see some rain over the weekend but chances remain low at this time. Dry surface conditions will mitigate fog chances overnight.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /through Wednesday/ . As of 600 PM Tue . Main concern in the short term is for a brief period of stronger winds this evening as the pressure gradient gets pinched with lower pressures over VA. This has caused SW winds to increase to 15-20 kt with frequent gusts to 25 kt expected over the warmer central waters where a SCA was raised earlier. The high res models indicated winds peaking 0-3Z then diminishing after midnight as the gradient begins to relax. Mixing will be harder to come by over cooler waters and opted to leave SCA headlines out for waters north of Oregon Inlet. Seas will build to 3-5 ft tonight.

Winds ease significantly late tonight, falling to 5-10 kt by Wed morning before increasing again slightly late Wed afternoon ahead of next shortwave and surface reflection, although winds should remain at 10 kt or less with seas generally 2-4 feet.

LONG TERM /Wed night through Sat/ . As of 330 AM Tuesday . The long term will start out of as SCA conditions subside across the area waves drop to 2-3 feet in the nearshore zones. This wont last however, as seas will pick up again to 3-5 feet on Thursday with occasional 6 through Friday morning. This as southwesterly winds pick up to 15-20 kts gusting to 25 kts. Seas will drop back to mainly 2-4 feet through saturday as winds relax but still remain breezy at times.

MHX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. NC . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 1 AM EST tonight for AMZ152- 154.
