. New AVIATION .

SHORT TERM. (Tonight) Issued at 156 PM CST Mon Dec 6 2021

Cool and breezy conditions will continue into the evening hours, with the wind making it feel like it's in the 30s for most places for the rest of the day. Winds will trend downward as we head toward sunset as surface high pressure builds over the area. Clear skies and light winds overnight will allow temperatures to drop quickly, with lows in the 20s expected across the region. A few of the normally colder places could dip into the upper teens by Tuesday morning.

LONG TERM. (Tuesday through Monday) Issued at 156 PM CST Mon Dec 6 2021

Quiet weather will persist for much of the work week, with a pronounced warming trend expected through Friday afternoon. The surface high will quickly shift off to the east tomorrow, causing a return to southerly winds and warming temps. A couple of week shortwaves will traverse the region, within primarily zonal flow aloft, on Tuesday night and Thursday. No precipitation is expected with these waves, with moisture remaining limited across the area in the wake of yesterday's strong frontal passage.

A significant warmup will then occur on Thursday as deep southwesterly flow ramps up ahead of a deeper upper trough and strong cold front. Anomalously high 850mb temps will lead to near record high temperatures, especially on Friday depending on the amount of cloud cover that occurs. Deepening moisture ahead of the approaching system should lead to some widespread cloud development by Friday afternoon which could keep temperatures a couple degrees lower than forecast. If more sunshine can occur, however, the all time December high temperature could be within reach Friday afternoon for portions of the forecast area.

Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase Friday afternoon and evening as the cold front moves into the area. Best chances appear to stay mainly east of our area at this time, but at least some scattered showers will be possible along the front as it sweeps through Friday night. Chances will quickly diminish after frontal passage, leaving behind cool and breezy conditions once again for Saturday. Any wrap around wintry precip chances appear to be very minimal at best, with the track of the upper low and surface low staying well north of our area on Saturday. Seasonable conditions will finish out the weekend with upper heights rising into early next week, signifying more above normal temperatures on the way into the middle part of next week.
