Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 302 AM PDT Tue Sep 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. A trough of low pressure will move through the region tonight bringing gusty winds and cooler temperatures. High pressure will then build over the area with winds aloft and at the surface will shift to the east on Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures warming to above normal.

DISCUSSION. Satellite loops show the upper-level trough digging southward over the Central California interior along with mid-level clouds forming east of the Sierra Nevada crest due to increased winds. Low clouds may develop towards sunrise over portions of Kern County, including towards the Grapevine and Tehachapi; we cannot rule out drizzle or sprinkles in these areas. Some low clouds may even impact Bakersfield for and keep temperatures from rising much above 70 degrees this afternoon. Our blended guidance is even showing a 36 percent chance of highs reaching only 70 degrees or lower at Bakersfield. If the high fails to reach 72 degrees there, a new record low maximum temperature could be set for today's date. Otherwise, expect gusty winds, or gusts to around 55 mph, through this evening along the favored slopes of the Mojave Desert in eastern Kern County, where we have extended the Wind Advisory until late this evening. Cool daytime highs will prevail in much of Central California. In addition, some breezy conditions and patchy blowing dust are possible in portions of the San Joaquin Valley later this morning into the afternoon and early evening hours.

Temperatures will trend back upward on Wednesday and even warmer on Thursday. The below average highs in the near-term will likely be short-lived, as another ridge of high pressure builds over our portion of the Golden State. Above average temperatures will likely occur by Thursday, as well as Friday and over the weekend, just in time to end this month and begin October. Highs in the warmest spots will most likely reach into the mid-90s in the Central Valley and Kern County desert. The probability of a 90+ degree reading in these areas is around 50 to 60 percent by as early as Friday. Warmer than normal temperatures will continue into early next week with little change expected.

AVIATION. In the Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountains, areas of MVFR visibilities, with local mountain obscured IFR visibilities, are expected due to smoke and haze, especially near active wildfires, through at least the next 24 hours. Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail today and tonight.

AIR QUALITY ISSUES. On Tuesday September 28 2021 . Unhealthy for sensitive groups in Sequoia National Park and Forest. Further information is available at Valleyair.org
