Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1000 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

SYNOPSIS. Mostly dry and mild weather conditions will prevail through midweek with subtle warming late in the week. Breezy to gusty offshore winds are expected in the higher terrain of the North Bay, East Bay and San Francisco Peninsula on Wednesday and Thursday.

DISCUSSION. as of 09:00 PM PST Tuesday .

A few areas of low stratus were developing this evening around San Francisco, Monterey Bay, and within the Salinas Valley. A consensus of the high resolution forecast model guidance suggest these clouds should persist overnight while possibly expanding into the North and Easy Bays. Fog may also develop, with the strongest signal for this being over the North Bay. However can't rule it out elsewhere along the periphery of the cloudier areas. Otherwise, winds were picking up a little in the North Bay hills, with gusts around 15-20 mph. These winds should increase into tomorrow as an offshore wind regime develops.

The forecast is in good shape this evening and no changes are anticipated.

PREV DISCUSSION. as of 02:40 PM PST Tuesday . After a cloudy and foggy start to the day skies finally clear mid-day. Afternoon satellite imagery does show some high clouds spilling in from the north so it's more like filtered sunshine this afternoon. Regardless, the late start kept temperatures on the cooler side today and a handful of stations will likely come in a few cooler than their forecast max temps (more 50s than 60s).

For tonight and the next few days: High pressure lurking off the coast will slowly build eastward keeping dry conditions in place. The building high pressure will also lead to a gradual warming trend. Highs will be generally in the 60s with a few low 70s interior. Overnight lows will be in the upper 30s to 40s. The more noteworthy item the next few days will be developing offshore flow. As upper level high pressure builds over the region an upper low swings through the the Great Basin. At the surface, high pressure will quickly follow the upper low with high pressure building over the Great Basin. Inland high pressure will result in offshore flow over the Bay Area. Offshore flow is forecast to build tonight, but increase during the day on Wednesday and linger all of the way into Friday. Winds will be under Advisory criteria, but still breezy to gusty in the hills. The offshore flow will also usher in drier air, but no fire weather concerns given the state of the fuels.

No rain is forecast through the next 7-10 days. Still eyeing the very long range (early Feb) for any chance of precip returning to the region.

AVIATION. as of 10:00 PM PST Tuesday . For the 06Z TAFs. Currently a mix of VFR/MVFR/IFR around SF Bay Area and the Central Coast. Patchy low CIGs have formed just off the coast and in the valleys, as high clouds continue to stream overhead. Expecting an increase in coverage of low stratus overnight, lowering most TAF sites to IFR/MVFR with local LIFR in areas of valley fog, specifically North Bay. Conditions will be slow to improve Wednesday morning, but the late morning and early afternoon should mark a return to widespread VFR. Winds will remain mostly light to moderate through the TAF period. Increasing NNE winds at around 1500-2000 ft AGL may lead to LLWS concerns Wednesday night for most of the SF Bay Area.

Vicinity of KSFO . Currently VFR but low clouds linger around the bay, as observed on area webcams. Expect lowering to IFR or at least MVFR by around 09z-10z. Light onshore winds diminish overnight. VFR returning towards late morning or early afternoon. Increasing NNE winds aloft may create marginal LLWS hazards Wednesday night.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . Mix of VFR/MVFR/IFR around bay area terminals. Stratus observed on satellite in the bay and down the Salinas Valley. Expanding coverage and some lowering of CIGs expected overnight for prevailing IFR/MVFR. Otherwise, light onshore winds becoming light and variable overnight, with slightly breezy upvalley winds in the Salinas Valley. VFR conditions return Wednesday afternoon.

MARINE. as of 09:43 PM PST Tuesday . Moderately breezy northwesterlies continue overnight and through most of the day Wednesday. Hazardous conditions are expected for smaller vessels through Wednesday night over the outer waters and near coastal jet regions. Winds will weaken by Thursday. A series of mid- period west to northwest swell continues through the forecast period.
