Area Forecast Discussion . CORRECTED National Weather Service Hanford CA 459 PM PDT Sun Sep 26 2021

Updated air quality section

SYNOPSIS. An approaching system will move through the region on Monday through Tuesday. This will usher in much cooler temperatures as well as strong winds in Kern County, southern end of the Sierra and also the valley on Monday afternoon. Dry weather will continue, although there may be some drizzle and low clouds into Kern County on Tuesday.

DISCUSSION. With the exception of poor air quality and areas of smoke, it's a nice afternoon with current temperatures in the mid to upper 80s in the valley and foothills, and the 80s and some low 90s in the Kern County desert. So bad air and nice temperatures, you can't win them all right?

Heading into Monday, the near-term ensembles and hi-res models show that the upper low currently over AZ will track to the northeast. Meanwhile, a deep trough off the PacNW coast will dig into NorCAL. This aforementioned trough will then take an "inside- slider" path through the central Great Basin on Tuesday. This will usher in a strong cold front through the central California interior. Pressure gradients will be on the increase starting Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon as the front fully passes through the district. Strong northwest winds will be likely along the Mojave desert slopes, as well as the southern end of the Sierra on Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon. One uncertainty remaining is the exact timing of the front and subsequent start of the strongest winds. The high-res models have been speeding up this frontal system compared to prior solutions. As such, the strongest wind gusts could start by late Monday afternoon. Winds will also be on the increase after the front in the SJV on Monday afternoon and evening. Lastly, northwest flow behind the front could produce some drizzle and low stratus into the Tehachapi/Grapevine areas.

The ensembles are in general agreement showing that this trough will continue to drive south into AZ on Wednesday. Cool northwest flow will setup over the area by Tuesday and will continue into Wednesday. Ensemble then have weak ridging returning the area with increasing temperatures back to average by the weekend.

AVIATION. In the Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountains, areas of MVFR visibilities, with local mountain obscured IFR visibilities, are expected due to smoke and haze especially near active wildfires this weekend. Intermittent MVFR visibilities due to smoke and haze are possible in the San Joaquin Valley today and tonight.
