AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 646 AM EDT Sat Sep 25 2021

SYNOPSIS. A dry cold front crosses the area tonight bringing a few more clouds. High pressure returns Sunday and Monday with another front expected to cross the region on Tuesday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. As of 645 AM EDT Saturday .

Early morning analysis shows high pressure over the SE CONUS with surface low pressure near the UP of Michigan and high pressure over the central Plains. Satellite and surface observations show mostly clear skies over most of the area but broken to overcast clouds continue to linger across southeastern portions of the CWA. Temperatures have fallen pretty quickly overnight given good to excellent radiational cooling conditions, ranging from the mid 40s NW to the upper 50s and low 60s SE. Some patchy fog is possible this morning but should mix out quickly as heating gets underway.

Expect another stellar weather day across the region with high temps in the mid and upper 70s. A few more clouds will be present this afternoon and evening, especially across the northern counties where a passing short wave trough and dry cold front will have the most influence. Not quite as cool tonight with lows generally in the 50s.

SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/. As of 315 AM EDT Saturday .

Continued dry and pleasant on Sunday with highs once again in the mid to upper 70s with dew points in the 50s as high pressure builds in from the west. Fewer clouds than Saturday will average out to mostly sunny for the day across the entire area. A touch cooler Sunday night as high pressure settles overhead, lows range from the upper 40s NW to the upper 50s SE.

Quiet weather persists into Monday with high pressure starting to move offshore by the afternoon. High temps creep upward into the low 80s as southwesterly flow sets up ahead of our next cold front. Overnight lows only fall into the upper 50s and low 60s as surface moisture slowing ticks upward.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. As of 315 AM EDT Saturday .

00z model guidance has shifted considerably from the previous consensus through the extended forecast period. Still expecting a warm day on Tuesday with high temps climbing into the 80s. Guidance has trended upward with the chance for scattered showers and storms accompanying a cold frontal passage Tuesday afternoon/evening. The stronger forcing with this system will largely stay to the north of the local area but will be sufficient to include chance PoPs across the northern half of the area with slight chance PoPs for the remainder of the area. Overnight lows in the upper 50s and low 60s.

Not as warm Wednesday behind the front with high temps in the 70s to low 80s north to south. Only slight chance Pops (generally aob 20%) for the afternoon hours. Overnight lows fall into the 50s to to low 60s.

For Thursday into Friday . Global model guidance has trended much farther north with the cut-off upper low pressure system, keeping the local area mainly in a moisture-starved NW flow regime for the late week period. Didn't want to stray too far from the previous/blended forecast so will continue to show slight chance PoPs near the coast Thursday into Friday but would not be surprised if most areas stay dry during the late week period if model trends continue in this direction. Highs generally in the 70s each day with lows in the 50s each night.

AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. As of 645 AM EDT Saturday .

VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the 12z TAF period. Occasional visibility reductions noted this morning with patchy fog. Any restrictions are expected to be short-lived at the main terminals. Light and variable winds inland this morning while N/NNE flow 5-10 kt continues closer to the coast. Winds are expected to shift to the NW by this afternoon ~5-7 kt. Cirrus are expected to increase in coverage from W to E late this morning with VFR CIGs expected.

Outlook: Dry with VFR conditions will persist over the weekend and through Mon/Tue as high pressure builds into the area and then slides offshore.

MARINE. As of 145 AM EDT Saturday .

Last of the SCAs this go around (over the NC ocean waters) expected to come down early this morning OTW. Sub-SCA conditions are then expected through early tonight as weak sfc high proves moves across the mid-Atlantic waters. A brief uptick in NW winds (to near 15 kt) will occur very late tonight into early Sun afternoon w/ and right behind a secondary cold front crossing the local waters. Sub-SCA conditions are expected late Sun through Mon. A (slight) increase in speeds on SW winds ahead of another cold front Mon night-Tue.

A moderate rip current risk is in effect today.
