Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 158 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will build over the region today before slowly pushing east into Tuesday. Slightly warmer conditions can be expected today and Tuesday before our next weak cold front pushes through. Another round of cooler air arrives with an area of high pressure building in later in the workweek.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. As of 145 AM EDT Monday .

Upper-level trough continues to move northeast and flow begins to become westerly again. Surface high pressure begins to build overhead today/tonight. Under clear skies and calm wind, good radiational cooling in the sheltered valleys that can decouple, so expect chilly temperatures this morning. Widespread 40s, with some locations reaching the 30s. Patchy fog also possible in the river valleys this morning.

Expect another clear, sunny, and dry day today with high pressure in control. Temperatures quickly warm after sunrise with 70s for the mountains and 80s for the east by the afternoon.

SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. As of 231 PM EDT Sunday .

Chance of showers Tuesday and Tuesday night .

500MB pattern amplifies Monday and Tuesday with an upper ridge over the central United States and troughing over the east. The short wave entering trough Monday night rounds the base and is off the coast by Tuesday night. But even with trough sharpening, heights do not fall much through Wednesday over the Mid Atlantic and Carolinas.

Surface through low level winds turn to the west then northwest with an increase in speed behind the short wave. 3KM NAM was showing the potential for some stronger gusts especially across northern and central Virginia and West Virginia late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Precipitable water values rise to neat 1.25 inches along the front late Tuesday.

Enough moisture for chance probability of precipitation and enough instability to support thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon ahead of the front. CAPES may be in the 1500-2000 J/kd range. With the better northwest wind, the probability of precipitation may eventually be extended farther west into the upslope areas of the Appalachains.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. As of 231 PM EDT Sunday..

Keeping forecast dry behind Thursday through Saturday .

All the models have the front south of the area by the end of the day Wednesday.

After Thursday, the evolution of the eastern trough is handled differently by the long range models with the GFS progressive and the ECMWF keeping a more blocky pattern. WPC was leaning much toward the cooler and drier ECMWF through the weekend. Surface high pressure over the Tennessee Valley get close enough to lighten the winds Thursday and Friday. Will be holding temperatures below NBM guidance and keeping a dry forecast for much of Saturday and Sunday.

AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. As of 145 AM EDT Sunday .

Mostly VFR conditions to continue through the valid TAF period.

Dry surface high pressure will keep the region dry with winds mostly calm this morning. Winds will back more toward the west/southwest today with some high clouds edging during the afternoon and evening.

Can not rule out LIFR visibilities/ceilings at KLWB as fog advects in around sunrise Monday.

Extended Aviation Discussion .

Generally VFR flight conditions are expected through Tuesday. A backdoor front and upper low developing across the Delmarva region will bring our next chance for precipitation and sub-VFR flight conditions Tuesday into the middle part of next week. Confidence in the forecast beyond Tuesday decreases considerably due to the developing blocking pattern.
