Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Increasing northwest winds over the waters today. Strongest winds are expected along the big sur coast south of point sur. Winds will remain elevated through mid week before diminishing. Seas remain mixed as a longer period and larger northwest swell has arrived along with a weaker southerly swell. The combination of larger swell and stronger winds will result in hazardous seas conditions over the waters through Wednesday, particularly for smaller vessels. Seas will begin to subside on Wednesday.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 449 AM PDT Tue Sep 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Seasonably cool conditions will continue Tuesday with breezy northerly winds in wake of yesterday's frontal passage. A warming and drying trend is then expected through late week and into the weekend with diminishing winds.

DISCUSSION. as of 03:34 AM PDT Tuesday . Precipitation associated with a frontal boundary that moved through the region during the past 12-18 hours has come to an end early this morning. The last place to report measurable rainfall was across the Monterey Peninsula where up to a few hundredths of an inch were reported (0.01" at KMRY). In wake of the frontal passage, only seeing a few low level clouds mainly in the hills within the increased northwest flow. Breezy winds will also develop and persist through much of the day as the mid/upper level trough axis shifts inland and away from the coast. Generally speaking, look for wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph near the coast and in the hills with gusts up to around 45 mph in the region's peaks. Fire concerns initially will be minimal given the recent rain and lingering boundary layer moisture. Additionally, temperatures look to remain a few to as much as 10 deg F below seasonal averages this afternoon.

As brief offshore flow develops in the region's higher elevations tonight through Wednesday night, look for warming and drying trend to occur. This will likely result in enhanced fire weather concerns in the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills and the Diablo Range through mid/late week. However, wind speeds are unlikely to reach critical thresholds. That said, critically dry conditions are expected across the interior in the coming days as high pressure builds over the region. As a result, we will continue to monitor fire weather concerns in the coming days.

By late week, look for afternoon temperatures across the interior to warm to 5-10 deg F above seasonal averages along with mostly clear sky conditions. Mild conditions are also likely near the coast each afternoon with the potential for mostly sunny skies there also. This pattern is likely to hold through the upcoming weekend as well. Forecast ensembles then indicate the return of troughing along the West Coast by the middle of next week.

AVIATION. as of 4:44 AM PDT Tuesday . For the 12z TAFs. Rain chances have pushed East and out of the area with post front clearing of the skies occuring. This has lead to widespread VFR, and with stratus failing to move inland Tuesday night, the VFR is expected to last through the TAF period across the area. Winds will begin to increase in the late morning, leading to a gusty afternoon. Surface winds look to back off into the evening, but keep their strength aloft in the North and East Bay, leading to LLWS concerns into Tuesday.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR through the TAF period. Expect mild to moderate winds to last into the early afternoon. Westerly winds will increase again for Tuesday afternoon with peak winds increasing to around 18 kts with around 24 kt gusts possible. These winds look to last into the Tuesday night before weakening into the late night.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . VFR through the TAF period. Expect mild winds to last into the early afternoon. Westerly winds will gain strength in the afternoon, leading to gusty conditions which will last into the early night.

BEACHES. The first larger northwest swell of the season continues. Swell heights of 8 to 10 feet at 13 to 15 seconds are forecast. Expect an increased risk of moderate to large breaking waves (13 to 17 feet) and stronger rip currents. Additionally, increasing winds behind a cold frontal passage in combination with this building swell may cause waves to run up farther along area beaches than usual. Waves will be capable of knocking down beach goers with a risk of being dragged into the cold turbulent ocean waters. Therefore, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued from through 11 PM Tuesday. This hazard is primarily for west to northwest facing beaches. Caution is urged, and it is recommended to stay off of rocks and jetties.

Never turn your back to the ocean.

Northwest swell will gradually subside on Wednesday.

MARINE. as of 04:45 AM PDT Tuesday . Northwest winds continue over the waters. Locally stronger winds will persist along the Big Sur coast south of Point Sur. Winds will then gradually strengthen later on Tuesday and remain elevated through mid to late week. Mixed seas remain with a moderate period northwest swell and a longer period southerly swell. An additional larger northwest swell will arrive tonight with seas quickly building into Tuesday. The combination of stronger winds and building swell will result in hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels. Seas will begin to subside on Wednesday.
