Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 436 AM PDT Wed Oct 20 2021

SYNOPSIS. Unseasonably cool and unsettled weather conditions are on tap between through the upcoming weekend as the parade of storms marches on. Lingering light to occasionally moderate rain will continue through Wednesday with the the next storm system arriving late Thursday into Friday. A final and rather potent storm system looks to arrive late in the upcoming weekend with gusty winds and potentially significant rainfall.

DISCUSSION. as of 03:07 AM PDT Wednesday . A weakening frontal boundary approaching the region this morning continues to bring generally light to occasionally moderate rainfall across the North Bay, greater San Francisco Bay Area and down into the Santa Cruz Mountains. Rainfall amounts in the past 12-hours have been greatest over the Coastal Sonoma Range where 0.50"-1.00" have been reported. Meanwhile, totals are now approaching 0.75" in the Marin Coastal Range with generally less than 0.10" for lower elevation locations around the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Additionally, breezy to gusty winds have develop in the region's higher elevations while never really strengthening too much along the coastline and/or in the region's valleys. Thus, will cancel the Wind Advisory currently in effect until 4 AM.

Forecast models are in good agreement with the boundary dissipating just off of the coastline later this morning or early afternoon. However, modest moisture advection will continue over the region through tonight before shifting northward on Thursday. Thus, look for lingering light precipitation to remain possible from the Santa Cruz Mountains northward during the next 24 hours or so. While some light rain may fall over the Central Coast, most interior locations of Monterey and San Benito counties will likely miss out on any measurable rainfall through Thursday. With mostly dry conditions forecast during the day Thursday, temperatures also look to warm slightly region-wide.

A second frontal system is then forecast to drop southward and inland Thursday night into Friday morning with another round of light to occasionally moderate rainfall. As with the current system producing rain over portions of the region, look for the greatest rainfall to be along the coastal ranges (particularly in the North Bay southward into the Santa Cruz Mountains) with lesser amounts inland. While locally breezy onshore winds are also likely ahead of and along this frontal boundary, widespread strong winds appear unlikely at this time. Seasonably cool conditions are also likely in wake of the frontal passage.

All attention turns to the third system on track to impact the region late Saturday into Monday. Both deterministic and ensemble guidance suggest IVT values to reach or exceed 750 kg m-1 s-1 at times along the coast during the aforementioned time frame. This would be an early season and most notable atmospheric river to impact the region since this past January. That said, run-to-run and model-to-model (deterministically speaking) guidance continues to waver on exactly where the deepest moisture advection and greatest upper level support will take aim along our coastline. Simply put, confidence remains moderate/high for a moderate strengthen atmospheric river to take aim at the San Francisco Bay Area and/or Central Coast Sunday into Monday, yet the details remain difficult to nail down at this time. Regardless, expecting 3.00"-5.00" rainfall amounts along the coastal ranges with 1.00"-3.00" totals elsewhere. As always with these types of systems, some rain shadowing will be likely, particularly in the Santa Clara and Salinas valleys. Lastly, strong and gusty winds will likely accompany a slow moving frontal boundary as it moves southward across the region. Lingering precipitation may be possible into early next week as well.

Be sure to stay tuned to the latest forecast information in the coming days, especially with respect to potential impacts from the late weekend system.

AVIATION. as of 04:36 AM PDT Wednesday . For the 12z TAFs. KMUX radar shows showers stalled around the SF Bay Area with observations recording precipitation over much of the region. Ceiling heights have lowered this morning down to 1500 to 4000 feet generally with an additional layer of mid/high level clouds at 5,000 to 10,000 ft AGL. Winds at the surface have mostly diminished aside from locally breezy conditions around the SF Bay. Expect surface gusts of 20-25 kt out of the S/SE into mid morning before diminishing. Locally breezy S/SE winds may return this afternoon, but overall wind direction will remain S/SE. Gusty winds aloft persist at about 30-35 kt at 500 to 2,000 ft. Thus, LLWS issues to continue locally over the next few hours.

Models show the cold front stalling in place and then falling apart later this morning. However, a continuous stream of moisture into the region will keep showers around on and off throughout the forecast period. Wet runways will continue to be an issue. This lingering moisture may also result in persistent MVFR conditions throughout the period. At least SCT to BKN cigs at 1,500 to 3,000 ft through the taf period. Lastly, models show winds aloft increasing again overnight across the North Bay with 925 mb winds at 30-35 kt. Given lighter surface winds, LLWS issues return for the North Bay into early Thursday morning.

Vicinity of KSFO . Currently VFR, but lower clouds have begun to form just across the bay at KOAK. SCT to BKN cigs expected at 2,000 to 3,000 ft to move in shortly and persist for much of the period. Showers remain in the vicinity and will continue on and off through tonight. Gusty S/SE winds remain a possibility into early this morning between 20-25 kt before diminishing. However, winds expected to remain out of the S/SE throughout the taf period with the possibility of more gusts this afternoon.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . Currently VFR as low to mid level clouds begin to move in. Radar shows some light shower activity over the bay. Precipitation to remain in the vicinity throughout the period, though heavy rain around the Monterey Bay is not expected. Latest models show an increase in low level moisture this afternoon when MVFR (possibly IFR) cigs are expected at least over the bay and peninsula. S/SE winds to continue into at least tomorrow morning 10-15 kt.

MARINE. as of 03:07 AM PDT Wednesday . Winds will diminish into the morning but remain breezy and gusty at times. Expect winds to remain southerly as yet another wet system approaches. Otherwise, a moderate northwest to west swell will persist in the waters through the week.
