Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 400 AM PDT Sat Sep 25 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cooling trend will occur through the weekend as onshore flow and marine influences spread inland. Even cooler, unsettled conditions are likely early next week with the potential for light rain to return to the North Bay.

DISCUSSION. as of 02:07 AM PDT Saturday . . Short Term .Today and Tonight. There is a fairly large surge of marine stratus this morning, giving coastal locations patchy fog and some light drizzle. The marine layer has risen to around 1,500ft to 2,00ft this morning. Skies will look to clear around noon today, with onshore flow establishing over the area this afternoon. The cooler ocean air will keep afternoon high temperatures around 5 to 10 degrees cooler than yesterday for interior locations.

Light upper level flow will allow elevated haze and smoke from the fires in southern CA to make its way up to the area today. The most hazy skies will be seen around Monterey and San Benito counties. There is a chance some of the haze could be mixed down to the surface in the far inland areas. The marine layer will make another surge inland tonight.

. Long Term .Sunday through Saturday. Light upper level steering flow continues through Monday morning. Seasonal temperatures will persist Sunday, with onshore winds. The marine layer will ebb and flow each night, with locally driven winds overnight.

The next system moves onshore OR/WA early Monday morning. The surface cold front is forecasted to move onshore over the North Bay Monday evening and into the night hours. Models have been consistent with the moisture associated with this system, and are showing typical moisture values for this time of year, around 1 inch. NAM model soundings show most of the moisture will be at or below 700mbs. This low level moisture will need decent lift for efficient rain and/or shower activity. Models have depicted the frontal boundary to weaken as it moves over MTR Monday night into later Tuesday morning. On top of this, the best positive vorticity advection happens in the North Bay where the upper level trough bottoms out. All of this leads to the best chances for measurable rain will be in the North Bay. Drizzle along the coast will be very common Monday night into Tuesday, however that might be the most that the Bay Area and Monterey Peninsula sees from this system.

Cooler night time temperatures Wednesday night for the North Bay valleys Tuesday and Wednesday night. Min temperatures could dip down into the mid 40s.

As the upper level trough progresses over NV, another short wave will move southward along the windward side. This will act to deepen the trough, keeping north to northwest flow over the area for Wednesday. Winds over the highest peaks and inland areas could see northerly winds mix down to the surface Wednesday afternoon. Higher surface pressure over the Great Basin could also lead to northeasterly winds. The chance of impactful offshore winds mid week next week are low, however there are still a lot of model runs between now and then, meaning things can change.

Temperatures slightly warm up towards the end of the week, as upper level high pressure quickly builds in and moves out.

AVIATION. as of 4:00 AM PDT Saturday . For the 12z TAFs. Stratus remains over the coastal areas and the Monterey Bay as well as OAK,APC, and STS. Expect LIFR for North Bay terminals and the Monterey Bay in the through much of the morning. SFO looks to fall to MVFR before sunrise. Areas of fog will be possible around the Monterey Bay and the North Bay through the night, while more interior areas look to remain fog-free. Cloud cover and those areas of fog look to thin in mid to late morning leading to widespread VFR for Saturday afternoon.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR until the late night, then MVFR. Expect lowers clouds (roughly BKN007) around OAK and much of the eastern portions of the SF Bay through the night. Mild winds will continue though the night and last well into Saturday. Cloud cover around the SF Bay will thin in the mid to late morning. Expect winds to build into the afternoon with Northwest winds peaking around 15 kts, which look to last through the evening. Status will be slow again to fill into the SF Bay, leading to IFR late Saturday night.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Slant range visibility reduced through the period. Otherwise similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . IFR/LIFR and times of VLIFR through the night and into the morning with areas of thick fog and moments of drizzle. Cloud cover will be slower to thin around the Monterey Bay, but VFR is expected to return around noon Saturday with mild winds. Expect stratus to return in the early evening, leading to IFR.

MARINE. as of 03:59 AM PDT Saturday . Northwest winds will continue over the coastal waters through the weekend. Locally breezy afternoon and evening winds expected near the Golden Gate. Northwest winds will begin to increase across the waters early next week. Mixed seas continue with a moderate northwest swell and a longer period southerly swell. A new longer period northwest swell will arrive on Sunday associated with a developing low over the Gulf of Alaska. Seas will quickly build into Tuesday.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tday. NONE.
