Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... A moderately large, longer period northwest swell has arrived and is outperforming model data by a few feet, with swell heights of 10 to 14 feet at roughly 15 to 17 seconds. This wave energy will bring hazardous conditions for small craft vessels, particularly in the surf zone, near shoals, and at harbor entrances with breakers of 15 to 20 feet. This wave energy will gradually subside later today and into tomorrow. Breezy to locally gusty northwest winds will persist during the day over in our outer waters and occasionally along some of our inner water zones.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1128 AM PDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Warming and drying trend continues into Friday. An approaching cold front late Friday brings cooler conditions over the weekend, but the area looks to remain dry. Early next week a frontal system brings rain chances to the Bay Area, with higher chances in North Bay.

DISCUSSION. as of 03:13 AM PDT Thursday . A relatively quiet night with mostly clear skies across the Bay Area. Only near term weather impact will be some patchy morning fog. Satellite fog product imagery shows some coastal fog and patchy inland valley fog. Some fog that develops may be locally dense. As of this discussion the Napa Airport is currently one half mile visibility. Otherwise, Thursday looks to be the mildest day of the next few thanks to an upper level ridge parked overhead. Highs will generally be in the 60s and 70s with the warmest interior locations cracking 80 degrees, which is about five degrees above climo.

The upper level ridge shifts eastward by Friday as a digging upper level low pressure moves into NorCal. The upper low will bring cooler temperatures heading into the weekend. Latest model guidance shows a few showers will be possible with the upper low, but most shower activity will remain north of the Bay Area. That being said, cannot completely rule out a passing shower over the far North Bay this weekend.

Those with outdoor plans Sunday evening - forecast is trending cooler with increasing clouds, but still dry at this time.

A more pronounced shift in the upper level pattern occurs Sunday night into Monday with a cold front moving in from the NW. Rain chances return to the Bay Area for the Monday morning commute. Rain looks most likely over the North Bay initially before move S and E. Definitely not another historic storm, but more beneficial rainfall for the Bay Area.

A brief drying trend develops behind the front on Tuesday, but fortunately it will be short-lived. Another round of rain will be possible the middle of next weeks. Details vary a lot, but the good thing is longer range models keep the storm door open.

AVIATION. as of 11:22 AM PDT Thursday . For the 18z TAFs. This morning's fog has been dissipating the last few hours leaving all terminals at VFR this afternoon. Surface winds will be fairly light again today, with maximum winds around 8-12 kts possible. Models such as HREF and HRRR hinting at patchy fog and low clouds again late tonight going into Friday morning, which could impact the North Bay terminals as well as KSFO and KOAK. Confidence on whether or not the fog will stay confined to the water or make it to the aforementioned terminals is still low-to-moderate at this time. Stay tuned for the updated TAF this evening.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. Light winds currently but will pick up slightly this afternoon and become more W/NW. VFR expected the rest of the afternoon into the evening. Fog may return again tonight which could bring lowered visbys and potentially cigs under 1000 ft. However, similar to last night/this morning, the fog could stay confined to the coast again with winds being light tonight. Stay tuned for 00z TAF.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . VFR. Winds will be ~8-12 kts this afternoon. Winds to shift NW in the coming hours. Stratus may return early tomorrow morning, bringing MVFR conditions and potentially brief IFR with locally dense fog.

MARINE. as of 02:24 AM PDT Thursday . Large west to northwest swell remains a concern through this morning even as wave heights and periods gradually subside. Hazardous seas are still expected, particularly for smaller vessels. Large breaking waves will also still be possible across nearshore shoals and around harbor entrances. Northwest winds will persist during the day over in our outer waters and occasionally along some of our inner water zones. Seas will continue subsiding as we go into tomorrow.
