Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Dodge City KS 528 PM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

. Updated aviation discussion .

SHORT TERM. (This evening through Monday) Issued at 330 PM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

Although the cold air mass has been shunted to the east, decent radiational cooling will allow for temperatures to fall into the lower 20s tonight. Surface high pressure will move off to the east and be replaced with a surface trough on the high plains on Monday. Southwest winds will become breezy with daytime heating, helping temperatures reach into the upper 50s to mid 60s, with the warmest readings around Johnson and Elkhart.

LONG TERM. (Monday night through Sunday) Issued at 330 PM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

Mild temperatures can be expected Tuesday ahead of the next cold front. A deep upper level trough will progress southeastward out of Canada into the Great Lakes region by Wednesday, resulting in a cold surge Wednesday. There is some uncertainty in how long the cold air will remain in the lee of the Rockies. In northwest flow regimes, it is difficult to keep cold air on the high plains in these regimes as southwest to northwest surface winds quickly erode the cold air. The ECMWF ensemble average is a little colder than the operational EC. There is still a chance for light snow accumulations (most likely an inch or less) late Wednesday night, especially for areas west of Dodge City out to the Colorado state line. High temperatures will moderate back into the 40s to lower 50s by the weekend as northwesterly mid to high level flow persists. Cold air shots will continue to move into the upper Midwest; but it is unclear how far southwest this cold air will progress. Precipitation chances are very low after Thursday morning.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Monday evening) Issued at 528 PM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

VFR/SKC conditions will prevail through this period. Surface high pressure moving southeast through western Kansas overnight will result in light northwesterly winds becoming southwest. Winds will become gusty from the southwest by late Monday morning as a surface low pressure trough deepens in the lee of the Rockies.

FIRE WEATHER. Issued at 330 PM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

A surface trough will intensify in the lee of the Rockies by Monday and progress eastward by afternoon. Near critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop across parts of southwestern Kansas, particularly along the Oklahoma state line from Meade county into Stevens county. Humidity values are expected to range from 15 to 20 percent during the afternoon, along with frequent wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph.
