Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 147 PM PST Thu Jan 20 2022

SYNOPSIS. Dry weather continues through the forecast period. Breezy north to east winds are expected Friday into Saturday, with the potential for locally strong gusts for Sierra ridges.

DISCUSSION. Visible satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies prevailing overhead interior northern California this afternoon. Temperatures are responding well to the full-solar and upper level ridge along the Pacific coast; upper 50s to low 60s have already been observed as of 1 pm PST. By the time the day wraps up, expect widespread 60s throughout the Sacramento and northern San Joaquin Valleys. Can't rule out an isolated 70 deg F reading, similar to yesterday. This equates to about 6 to 12 deg F above normal.

Upper level disturbance will ripple through the ridge's clockwise flow on Friday and into Saturday. As it drops into the Great Basin, we'll see offshore surface pressure gradients increase over NorCal. This will result in strong northerly/easterly winds that will materialize during the day on Friday, peak late Friday afternoon/Friday night, and linger into Saturday. Strongest winds will be along and just west of the Sierra crest with gusts of 35 to 55 mph, locally 70+ mph at the wind-prone peaks, ridgetops, and favored canyons/gaps. Peak winds will rapidly diminish in the lower foothills and along the far eastern side of the Sacramento Valley -- exception being the wind-prone gaps (e.g., Jarbo Gap). For the Valley, expect northerly wind gusts in the 25 to 40 mph range. Strongest Valley winds will be concentrated along/west of Interstate 5 and in/around the Delta where gusts could approach 45 or even 50 mph. Impacts from the winds include the potential for downed trees/branches from already-weakened/burned trees, localized power outages, difficult driving conditions for high- profile vehicles, and the blowing of unsecured objects. Furthermore, those with mountain recreation plans such as skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, etc on Friday and Saturday should be mindful of the strong winds while in the vicinity of trees. A Wind Advisory has been issued for portions of the region beginning Friday morning.

Offshore winds will relax by Sunday with dry conditions and high pressure in control. // Rowe

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday).

Upper level ridge over the eastern Pacific will maintain residence and dominate our weather pattern heading into next week. This will result in dry conditions with above normal temperatures. Ensembles and cluster analysis remain generally unenthusiastic with precipitation chances through about the end of the month. // Rowe

AVIATION. VFR conditions expected for the next 24 hours except for local MVFR/IFR/LIFR conditions possible in BR/FG in the northern San Joaquin Valley 09-18z Friday. Winds generally less than 12 kts Thursday, increasing after 12-15z Friday to surface gusts up to 25-40 kts in the Valley and up to 30-50 kts, locally up to 70 kts, over the Sierra Nevada.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Wind Advisory from 7 AM Friday to noon PST Saturday for Carquinez Strait and Delta-Central Sacramento Valley-Northern San Joaquin Valley-Southern Sacramento Valley-West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada-Western Plumas County/Lassen Park.
