Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Hanford CA 341 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

UPDATE. Updated Air Quality Section.

SYNOPSIS. High pressure is forecast to build over the San Joaquin Valley over the next few days as the upper low that has been giving us high clouds moves east out of the area. Morning rounds of Tule Fog look possible as the ridge remains overhead for the next few days. Dry weather is expected to continue through the next 7 days.

DISCUSSION. Ridge of high pressure is starting to build over the Eastern Pacific ocean today. We again did not see fog form this morning due to mixing from the cut off low overhead. This has allowed solar heating this morning, which is allowing temperatures to rise into the lower to mid 60s this afternoon. Clear skies under the ridge of high pressure would favor another round of Tule Fog for tonight as the lower atmosphere will be able to cool off with little to no mixing. The uncertainty with tonight's fog forecast is more of an issue of when it starts rather than if it forms.

The ridge of high pressure will allow for more chances of morning Tule Fog formation across the valley for the next few days. An inside slider shortwave trough is being advertised by global ensemble models for Friday night and Saturday morning, which will serve to weaken the ridge overhead, and possibly lead to a weak to moderate level mono wind event. NBM probabilistic guidance has backed off on wind speed probabilities across the Sierra Nevada from yesterday, as it's now predicting a 5% chance of wind gusts up to 45 mph across the highest elevations of the Sierra Nevada in the HNX CWA. The lowered probabilities seem to coincide with a slight eastward trend in the shortwave trough's trajectory looking at todays 12z suite of global ensemble forecasts. However, this will need to be monitored in case models trend the trough westward in the coming days. Thereafter, the ridge of high pressure looks to regain control over the area, so more fog seems to be in store for the SJ Valley early Sunday and next week. Dry weather will prevail into the foreseeable future.

AVIATION. Local IFR to LIFR visibility in fog across the San Joaquin Valley after 06z Wednesday through 18z Wednesday. Otherwise VFR conditions will prevail across the Central CA interior during the next 24 hours.
