Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wichita KS Issued by National Weather Service Topeka KS 320 PM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021

SHORT TERM. (This afternoon through Saturday night) Issued at 320 PM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021

Patchy frost will once again be possible tonight across portions of central Kansas as temperatures could fall into the mid 30s (although upper 30s to low 40s are favored). Winds will shift out of the south later this evening and could bring in some warmer temperatures. Therefore, with such low confidence in frost development, will forgo any frost headlines.

Another quiet day is expected tomorrow. Friday will be warmer than today as warm-air advection begins in earnest. Rain chances will increase tomorrow night, especially along and east of I-35, as a warm front lifts through the area. There remains a lot of uncertainty between the 12 UTC model suite as to how far north the warm front progresses Friday night and Saturday. The 12 UTC GFS remains the most progressive and brings the front all the way north of I-70 while the NAM and ECMWF are further south, along the Highway 54 corridor. Elevated storms are possible along the front Friday night into Saturday morning as a mid-level wave moves through coincident with the front and a strong low-level jet kicks in. Hail would be the primary severe threat with any of these elevated storms as forecast soundings indicate ample CAPE above the de-coupled boundary layer. Surface-based storms are possible south of the warm front Saturday afternoon, but capping and the lack of any significant forcing mechanism will likely limit any surface-based convection. Eventually, Sunday, an upper-level low and sharp cold front will swing through and could kick off some strong to severe storms east of the Kansas Turnpike in the late afternoon.

LONG TERM. (Sunday through Wednesday) Issued at 320 PM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021

After an active weekend we should get a break from the action Monday as we sit between two systems, one departing east toward the Great Lakes and one to the west entering the Rockies. Another significant upper-level tough could move into the central Plains on Tuesday. This system could bring another chance of strong/severe storms to the area as indications are shear and CAPE will ample for at least strong clusters if not isolated cells. Northwest flow is favored for the remainder of the week. This pattern could bring in additional chances for precipitation and cooler temperatures.

AVIATION. (FOR THE 18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z Friday AFTERNOON) ISSUED AT 1204 PM CDT THU OCT 21 2021

VFR at all TAF sites through the TAF period. Light northwest winds today will slowly swing around to the south this evening for all terminals. Southwesterly winds will increase to 10-15 kts tomorrow at the end of this TAF period.
