Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1005 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022

SYNOPSIS. Dry and seasonably mild weather for the Bay Area this weekend. A very slight chance of showers for coastal Monterey as a weak low west of Point Conception sends some clouds over the Central Coast. Next week the weather pattern looks dry and mild with high pressure lasting into next weekend. Some signs for a possible pattern shift towards the end of the month.

DISCUSSION. as of 09:34 PM PST Saturday . As of 8:30 pm PST, the Tsunami Advisory was cancelled for the entire coastal area of our CWA (Sonoma County southward through Monterey County including the San Francisco and Monterey Bays). While we have gone below the criteria for a tsunami advisory, folks should know that there are still fluctuations on tidal gages meaning that some of that tsunami energy still lingers. Those rapid fluctuations, even though they are on the decline, mean that we have moderate to strong currents in the water which could sweep people out into the ocean. Continue to avoid the beaches tonight.

In non-tsunamigenic news . we are having a few light showers impact the Salinas Valley in Central CA and radar shows those echoes moving into South Bay. Thus far, have only seen one gage in South Bay measure 0.01". The air near the surface is still fairly dry so if any rain does reach the surface for the rest of tonight, it will likely be brief and only trace amounts to a few hundredths.

Otherwise, no changes to the current forecast package.

PREV DISCUSSION. as of 02:24 PM PST Saturday .

As long as you stay away from the coastal dangers, today is looking like another comfortable day. A few interior areas are peaking in the low 70s, while some of the valleys in the North Bay as well as coastal locations will struggle to get into the low 60s. Afterwards, expect a mild evening with light winds across the board. Tonight could offer some slight chances for drizzle around Monterey Co as a weak low pressure moves toward the region. Don't count on seeing too much from this low, but it will cause a slight cooling trend.

The cooling caused by this low will mostly be focused on the next few days, but only by a few degrees. As the low pressure exists and a ridge deepens, temperatures will begin to warm in the mid week and skies will clear as well. Expect this warming trend to allow temperatures to peak in the 60s along the coast and into the 70s for more interior areas, and lows sticking to the 40s for most areas.

The longer-term models favor the ridging pattern well into the next weekend, keeping the forecast dry and warm.

AVIATION. as of 10:05 PM PST Saturday . For the 06Z TAFs. Predominantly VFR conditions with high clouds prevailing for much of the period, as a low pressure center spins just offshore of SoCal. Radar imagery shows light rain moving up the Salinas Valley, and now reaching southern SF Bay. Scattered reports of light rain reaching the surface, enough to potentially wet runways. May see tempo lowered vis as well. Otherwise valley FG potential in North Bay with IFR/LIFR around KSTS through the morning. Generally light winds throughout the cwa with the exception of KLVK with breezier easterly winds around 10-12 kts. Expect light winds tomorrow and VFR conditions.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR prevailing through the TAF period with tempo MVFR possible overnight in -RA/BR. BKN cloud layer between 10000 and 20000 feet. High clouds through most of the period.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . VFR with occasional -RA/BR. Expect light winds to continue for most of the Monterey Bay through the TAF period. The Salinas Valley, however will see breezy SE winds overnight into Sunday morning (8-10 kts).

MARINE. as of 09:05 PM PST Saturday . Tsunami energy has diminished across the coastal waters and an advisory is no longer in effect. Generally light and variable winds persist across the coastal waters tonight through early next week, with some locally breezy to gusty offshore winds through coastal gaps in the early morning. Moderate period west to northwest swell trains will move across the waters through most of the upcoming week.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tngt. None.
