Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1048 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022

SYNOPSIS. Dry weather continues through the forecast period. Patchy late night and morning fog will continue to be possible at times in the Central Valley.

DISCUSSION. The Evening Update: Cyclonic (Ely) circulation around the Rex Block (~30N/125W) continues to spread abundant high cloud cover over Norcal, a repeat of yesterday. And, it looks as if this will continue to be the case until about Tue when this block breaks down. Until then, more of the same with milky high clouds and morning Valley fog.

The high cloudiness is masking the developing ST/Fog emanating from the Nrn SJV, and forming in the Srn Sac Vly where slightly cooler temps than 24 hrs ago, high RH and light winds coexist. HREF IFR progs maintain the higher low cloud/VSBY probabilities mostly along the I-5//Hwy99 corridors and through Ern portions of Solano Co. A DFA may need to be hoisted once again as the night wears on. For now VSBYS are holding above criteria making the timing of any potential DFA problematic. JHM

Previous Discussion.

Morning fog lingered into noon today in the southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys and Delta as high clouds spread northward into the area and diminished solar heating to some extent. A Dense Fog Advisory continued through noon. Multiple vehicle accidents were reported in the morning, likely due to the dense fog. More fog is expected over the next few days. Please take the reduced visibility seriously and delay travel or slow down if you must travel!

The HREF shows more potential for fog developing overnight. More high and mid level clouds from a low pressure system spinning off the Southern California coast are expected overnight. The overnight cloud cover could limit to some extent how much dense fog develops by Sunday. Still, the potential is there for more visibility issues through Sunday morning from around Marysville southward. Northerly winds should keep things more free of fog over the northern Sacramento Valley. More overnight and morning fog is possible into early next week, though lingering mid level clouds should continue to limit widespread dense fog events.

Little change is expected in the pattern for the short term forecast. We will remain under a ridge of high pressure through the weekend with the low gradually moving northward into early next week, when it phases together with a broad trough. Dry weather continues with dry northwesterly flow over the area. Highs will remain similar to today and will remain seasonably mild, several degrees above average. Overnight lows will continue to be near average. EK EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday). Models are in agreement that a ridge will be the dominant feature over California through the extended forecast period. So, expect dry weather with slightly above normal high temperatures to continue as well across interior NorCal. Some patchy overnight and morning fog possible in the Southern Sac/Northern San Joaquin Valleys through the rest of the period. Locally breezy north to east wind possible Thursday into Friday.

AVIATION. Conditions in the Valley have gradually improved to VFR/MVFR, but widespread IFR/LIFR conditions are expected to return overnight in low cigs and in BR/FG from around KMYV southward. Surface winds generally at or below 10 kts. EK

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
