Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 241 PM PDT Fri Oct 15 2021

SYNOPSIS. Warm and dry weather continues into the weekend. Cooler weather along with a chance of precipitation returns Sunday afternoon and night. More unsettled weather mid to late week into next weekend.

DISCUSSION. High pressure has built into NorCal and that is bringing pleasant weather to end the week. Highs this afternoon will top out in the lower 80s across the Valley and 60s and 70s over the higher elevations. The upper level ridge and high pressure will begin to track east on Saturday but will still be the main influence for our weather bringing another great fall day. Highs will be similar tomorrow to what we saw today but will be a bit warmer in the higher elevations.

A quick moving short wave trough will then approach the area for Sunday, this will bring changing conditions. Clouds will begin to build in Saturday night and we should see light showers reach the Coastal Range by late morning/early afternoon Sunday associated with the cold front. Showers will continue to overspread the area during the afternoon and evening as the cold front works east. The cold front looks to clear the area by the mid evening but showers are going to linger into Sunday night as the trough axis spins through. This system will have some moisture to work with but overall QPF totals will be low, generally less then 0.10" in the Valley and 0.10" to 0.40" over the higher elevations. Snow levels will be just under pass level Sunday but will start to fall Sunday night falling to around 5500 feet early in the night. A few inches of snow will be possible above 5500 feet with the biggest snow impacts coming after the sun sets into the early overnight Sunday.

Short wave ridging builds in on Monday but cool air will build in behind the departing systems. This will bring a chilly day with Valley highs only in the 60s and 40s and 50s in the higher elevations.

-CJM

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Tuesday THROUGH Friday). A shift to unsettled weather is expected for much of the extended forecast. Clusters continue to indicate an initial wave ahead of the main trough which will bring some precipitation chances to far northern California Tuesday into Wednesday. With this push, the best chances for precipitation will be in the higher elevations north of Highway 50, with some slight chances in the Valley. From here, the main deep trough remains relatively stagnant until late Friday into the weekend when more widespread chances for precipitation are expected throughout the entire area. Exact timing and QPF amounts are hard to say at this time, as there is quite a bit of difference in deterministic models. Overall, expect a wetter and colder pattern to take hold for the end of next week and keep up to date with the forecast.

AVIATION. VFR conditions expected over the next 24 hours over interior Northern California. Winds generally less than 10 kts.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
