Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 223 PM PST Sun Jan 16 2022

SYNOPSIS. Dry weather continues through the forecast period. Patchy late night and morning fog will continue to be possible at times in the Central Valley.

DISCUSSION. Quiet weather continues as high pressure ridging will continue to dominate the pattern continues. This means more dry weather, cool morning temperatures and mild afternoons. It also means more overnight and morning fog, which has been a factor in recent car accidents in the area. Give yourself extra time and make sure to drive slowly in the fog!

A cut-off low currently off the central California coast of central CA will slowly move to north and then shift inland Monday. This will bring mid to high level clouds at times. This cut off low will get phased into a broad long wave trough extending into the central US by Tuesday. A short wave trough then pushes into the Pacific Northwest then digs into the Great Basin late Tuesday into Wednesday. This will bring northerly flow over NorCal but the north winds should be relatively light. Strong eastern Pacific ridging then builds back in during the day Wednesday.

The most impactful weather in the short term by far will be fog. Patchy fog is expected to develop again tonight from around Marysville southward into the San Joaquin. Areas of fog with locally dense fog are likely by daybreak, impacting the Monday morning commute. Mid to high level clouds should limit widespread dense fog. Fog is expected to return again for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Increasing north wind could limit fog Thursday morning to more sheltered areas. EK

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday).

Ensemble and deterministic models continue to be in agreement on an upper ridge being the dominant synoptic feature over interior NorCal through the extended period. Dry weather with high temperatures slightly above normal will persist. The Southern Sac/Northern San Joaquin Valleys may see patchy fog in the overnight and morning hours. Locally breezy north to east winds will be possible Friday into Saturday.

AVIATION.

Widespread MVFR/IFR conditions are expected to return overnight in low cigs and in BR from around KMYV southward into the northern San Joaquin Valley and Delta. Isolated LIFR conditions in FG possible through 18z. Surface winds generally at or below 10 kts.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
