Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 159 PM PST Tue Dec 7 2021

SYNOPSIS. Generally dry weather conditions along with overnight/morning fog is expected through Wednesday. Another weather system will then bring light rainfall to the region from Wednesday night into Thursday followed by cooler temperatures into late week. A more potent storm system looks to bring widespread rainfall to the region late in the weekend into early next week.

DISCUSSION. as of 01:58 PM PST Tuesday . A mix of sun and clouds this afternoon in wake of a passing weather system that brought generally light rainfall to the region last night into early this morning. With this, temperatures have warmed in to the mid/upper 50s with mid/upper 60s in the region's sunnier locations. Look for mostly dry conditions region- wide tonight and into early Wednesday as a weak short-wave ridge drops in from the north in wake of the exiting system. However, look for patchy/areas of fog as boundary layer moisture remains high.

Unsettled conditions quickly return late Wednesday into Thursday as another trough drops southward down the West Coast. This system looks to bring another round of deeper moisture advection across the Central Coast with the potential for light rainfall. Given the lack of a more organized weather system, cannot rule out light rain over much of the region yet the focus looks to be from the Santa Cruz Mountains southward through the rest of the Central Coast (similar to our previous system). Rainfall amounts again look to be around or less than 0.10" for most areas with totals up to around 0.25" in the coastal ranges. In wake of this exiting system, conditions will dry out Thursday night into Friday with the potential for strengthening offshore winds in the North Bay and East Bay mountains/hills.

Cold air advection will spread in behind the passing frontal boundary resulting in cooler temperatures Friday into the upcoming weekend. Look for maximum temperatures in the 50s to lower 60s (40s in the higher elevations) with overnight lows in the 30s and 40s. Will monitor more closely in the coming days for any potential frost/freezing conditions.

A more active weather system with a deeper plume of moisture is forecast to develop and advect inland late Saturday over the North Bay. This should allow for light rain to develop over that region before increasing in intensity and coverage across the entire region through the day Sunday. At this time, confidence is increasing given both the ensembles and deterministic models continue to converge on a similar solution with respect to a weak atmospheric river impacting the region late Sunday through Monday. However, as we remain 5-7 days out in time, the details remain a bit out of focus. Regardless, we are likely talking rainfall amounts of a few inches in the coastal ranges/wettest locations, 1.00"- 2.00" for many of the major urban areas and potentially lesser amounts in the rain shadowed locations. Stay tuned as the forecast is likely to change and become more refined in the coming days.

AVIATION. as of 10:24 AM PST Tuesday . For the 18z TAFs. The last few areas of mist and low clouds are continuing to clear, but mid to high clouds will last through the day. Surface winds will stay light to moderate for the TAF period. Wednesday morning looks to provide another batch of low clouds and mist/fog leading to IFR and LIFR across the region.

Vicinity of KSFO . MVFR into the afternoon, followed by VFR. Expect moderate winds this afternoon that will ease into the evening. Mist will reduce visibility into the night and CIGS look to fall to 900 ft AGL in the late night and early morning, leading to IFR. Conditions will be slow to clear into Wednesday, but the afternoon offers another round of VFR.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . VFR until the late night. Expect surface winds to be light to moderate around the Monterey Bay through the TAF period. Chances for fog and mist return late tonight with low clouds also building around the Monterey Bay, leading to IFR through much of the late night lasting well into Wednesday morning.

MARINE. as of 09:10 AM PST Tuesday . Expect winds to become breezy over most of the waters today, lasting through early Wednesday morning. These winds will generate steep wind waves making it hazardous for smaller vessels. Rain is expected through the early morning hours with a slight chance for thunder in our outermost waters. A moderate period northwest swell is forecast to arrive on Wednesday ahead of the next cold front that will increase winds and bring another chance for rain.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tngt. NONE.
