Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Generally light to locally moderate northwest winds will continue into tonight. Breezy evening winds expected where coastal jets from south pigeon point and along the big sur coast south of point sur. Winds will briefly shift out of the south to southwest into Monday over much of the waters as a weak cold front moves through. Northwest winds will quickly return by Monday night and then increase into mid week. Seas remain mixed with a moderate west to northwest swell and a longer period southerly swell. A second larger northwest swell will arrive Monday night with seas building into Tuesday. The combination of stronger winds and building swell will result in hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1048 PM PDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. Rain showers are still on track Monday afternoon and night along with cooler temperatures. Amounts still look on the lighter side. Gusty winds behind the rain on Tuesday and Wednesday will bring warmer temps and some elevated fire weather conditions.

DISCUSSION. The Evening Update: Upper trof W of 130W forecast to near the Pac NW and Nrn CA coast by 00z Tue, preceded by a cold front. Doesn't appear dynamics will be strong enough along the front to cause significant precip, but a strong vort near the base of the trof will increase PVA over Norcal and should result in scattered to numerous showers. Some C-G strikes are detected near the closed low circulation off the Pac NW coast this evening, and the HREF prob of Refl >40 dBZ indicates about a 40 pct chance of the same over the NErn mtn and foothill zones Mon evening. However, rainfall amounts are expected to be light with the EPS suggesting QPF up to 0.40" in the NErn portion of the CWA, and only a tenth or so on the GEFS. Averaging the two may yield a better estimation. JHM

Previous Discussion.

No major changes to the forecast except to reduce expected rain amounts a bit for incoming weak system. Good agreement that the trough and cool front will move across the area pretty much late Monday afternoon and night. Amounts across the valley look to be on average below 0.10 of an inch. Heaviest rain up to about 0.25 of an inch north of I-80.

System very progressive and we will already be on the dry and windy part of it by Tuesday. Expect normal areas to be breezy behind the system Tuesday in west and north Sac valley. Upper trough doesn't dig that deep so shouldn't see anything like wind advisory criteria but breezy enough to be a little worried about fire weather especially with not much rain.

Monday night and Tuesday breezy conditions continue and relative humidities will drop some which will continue the fire weather concerns At this time. not seeing red flag criteria but will need to keep an eye on it.

Wednesday upper level trough and its impact slide east of the area for a mild warmer day.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday).

Ensemble means in good agreement that Thursday upper ridging builds in with dry and warmer conditions. Also good agreement in Friday that a weak wave knocks down the ridge a bit but should be dry and not windy with little to no impacts. Saturday and Sunday . cluster analysis showing 4 solutions . all of which have NorCal in a weak upper flow pattern with possibly a more organized trough moving into Pacific North West. Overall looking dry with not much wind and a low impact extended. Rasch

AVIATION.

VFR conditions the next 24 hours at the TAF sites. Winds generally at or under 12 knots except through the Delta and over the Sierra where gusts to 30 knots will be possible.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
