AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 350 PM EDT Mon Oct 18 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure builds into the local area through midweek, bringing more seasonable temperatures and dry conditions. A cold front crosses the region late this week or the first part of the weekend.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/. As of 200 PM EDT Monday .

Despite being a bit breezy this afternoon . pleasant Fall wx across the local area. NW winds remain gusty to 20-30 mph into early evening then wane (lastly at the coast) for the overnight hours. SCT CU mainly INVOF the ern shore will be dissipating w/ the loss of heating this evening. Another chilly night as sfc hi pres nudges closer to the local area from the W. Lows 40-45F Central/W (locally colder spots may have readings down into the u30s) . m40s-l50s towards the coast.

SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY/. As of 200 PM EDT Monday .

A dry wx period w/ a warming trend through mid week as sfc hi pres (initially just SSW of the local area Tue) slides to off the SE CONUS coast Wed-Thu. Primarily WSW winds Tue begin the warmup . then SW flow Wed-Thu return temperatures to (well) above normal In a quickening zonal flow. a cold front will be approaching from the W late Thu. Mainly SKC through the period.

Highs Tue mainly in the l-m70s. Lows Tue night from the m-u40s inland to the m50s at the coast. Highs Wed mainly in the m-u70s. Lows Wed night in the u40s-l50s inland to the m-u50s at the coast. Highs Thu mainly in the u70s-l80s.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/. As of 210 PM EDT Monday .

The cold front mentioned in the short term period crosses the local area late week. Some differences remain w/ the frontal passage which will make for challenges WRT temperatures/pcpn chcs. 12Z/18 GFS remains slower than the 00Z/18 ECMWF by Fri into Sat. Have gone w/ a blended solution which puts the highest PoPs (20-40%) Fri-Fri night then end mainly Sat morning. Sharping of the trough aloft through the NE/mid-Atlantic states Sat-Sun expected to lead to cooler/dry wx (esp late Sat-Sun). Models hinting at a psbl quick moving system potentially leading to increased clouds and pcpn chcs Mon Again. leaded towards the blended guidance WRT that second system early next week.

Lows Thu night from the u50s-m60s. Highs Fri in the l-m70s N to the m-u70s S. Lows Fri night in the l-m50s N and W to the u50s- around 60F SE. Highs Sat in the u60s-around 70F N to the l70s S. Lows Sat night in the m-u40s Central/W to the l-m50s towards the coast. Highs Sun/Mon in the m-u60s.

AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. As of 1250 PM EDT Monday .

VFR conditions are expected through the 18Z/18 TAF period. SCT CU . mainly at SBY through early this evening then dissipating. NW winds to remain gusty to 20-25 kt this afternoon then waning for tonight. VFR conditions persist Tue through Thu. Next chance for sub-VFR conditions SHRA chcs comes w/ the crossing of the next cold front late week (Fri into early Sat).

MARINE. As of 350 PM EDT Monday .

Current wx analysis depicts high pressure centered over the TN Valley and low pressure in far E Canada. The pressure gradient between the two systems is allowing for NW winds 15-25 kt with gusts up to 30 kt across the northern waters. Winds will subside this evening across the southern coastal waters before a second push overnight increases winds back to 15-20 kt with gusts to around 25 kt across the Ches Bay, Lower James, and coastal waters. Have therefore extended the SCAs for the rivers and Currituck Sound until 7 PM, for the Lower James and coastal waters until 4 AM, and for the Ches Bay until 7 AM. Waves and seas are 2-4 ft and 3-5 ft respectively. Expect waves to subside to 2-3 ft by Tues morning and 1-2 ft by Tues afternoon. Expect seas to subside to 2-4 ft late tonight into Tues.

High pressure will continue to build into the area and center over the SE Tues into Wed before moving off the SE coast Thurs. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure will track from the Great Lakes into SE Canada Thurs with a trailing cold front approaching the area Fri. Given high pressure near/over the local area through Wed, expect sub-SCA conditions to prevail. SW winds ramp up Thurs/Thurs night ahead of the approaching cold front with low-end SCA conditions possible. There will also be the potential for SCA conditions for the northern coastal waters Thurs night due to 5 ft seas.
