Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 231 PM PDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS.

Locally breezy today with warm and dry conditions continuing into this weekend. Moderate head risk today around the Sacramento and Delta region with some patchy moderate heat risk expected again tomorrow. A cooling trend is forecast by early next week leading to below average temperatures. Precipitation is possible over Northern California with best chances over the higher elevations north of I-80.

DISCUSSION.

Dry and breezy conditions are being observed across much of interior Northern California today. The Sacramento Valley has seen sustained winds of around 10 to 20 mph with gusts reaching up to 35 mph for some locations along the western and northern end of the Valley. The SAC - RNO gradient has been hovering around 6 mb today. Relative humidity values are also low ranging from teens to low 20s for much of the region as of this afternoon. Winds through the Valley are expected to weaken into this evening. The Fawn Fire just to the north and east of Redding has been active today as indicated by the GOES fire temperature. Smoke from this fire is being transported into the northern and northwestern portions of the Sacramento Valley due to the northerly winds in the area. High pressure over the region in combination with these north winds has lead to warm temperatures with moderate heat risk for the Sacramento metro area and Delta region today with highs forecast to be near the century mark with 90s widespread elsewhere. Breezy northeast winds are also forecast for the Sierra and southern Cascades overnight and into tomorrow morning with the SAC - RNO gradient forecast to peak around 10 mb tonight. This will lead to continued elevated fire weather concerns for the area into tomorrow. Warm and dry weather is expected again tomorrow with lighter winds.

Ensemble guidance indicates some flattening of the ridge this weekend leading to generally quiet weather before a pattern change is expected by early next week. Cluster analysis has come into better agreement deep troughing over the eastern Pacific will push onshore early next week bringing unsettled weather to Northern California. Cooler temperatures with passing clouds and periods of breezy onshore winds are expected as this trough makes its way into the Pacific Northwest.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday).

Cluster analysis continues to indicate a trough bringing unsettled weather to our region next week. Cooler temperatures upwards of 10 to 20 degrees below climatology are forecast across the region by Tuesday. Precipitation will be possible generally for far northern California with best chances over the higher elevations. Current projections indicate this to be a low impact event overall with little precip expected to reach interior northern California. Breezy onshore winds will also be possible at times.

AVIATION.

VFR conditions next 24 hours except for local MVFR/IFR conditions vicinity Fawn Fire. Local northeasterly surface wind gusts 20-30 kts northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades through 18Z Friday, and northerly 15-25 kts in the Sacramento Valley until 02Z Friday.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
