Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 156 PM PDT Thu Oct 21 2021

SYNOPSIS.

A frontal system will bring additional rain chances to the area late tonight into Friday. Drying conditions are expected for Friday night into Saturday morning. An atmospheric river will then take aim on the region Sunday into Monday bringing gusty winds, hazardous beach and marine conditions, and potentially significant rainfall.

DISCUSSION. as of 01:55 PM PDT Thursday .

Tonight through Friday:

A frontal zone -- attendant to occluding low pressure over the northeast Pacific -- will move through our area. Large-scale lift should be maximized during this time given increasing jet-level divergence and cyclonic vorticity advection with the upper wave. This will combine with low-level frontal forcing and a seasonally respectable moisture plume to produce brief moderate rainfall as the front passes through from northwest to southeast. Can't rule out a rumble of thunder either over the northern waters and/or adjacent North Bay given some modest instability. Otherwise beneficial rainfall is the main story for this event, with additional rain amounts ranging from 1-3" for the North Bay Mountains, ~1" in the Santa Cruz Mountains, to ~0.2" to 0.75" in the valleys. The primary window for precipitation should begin late tonight for the North Bay, shifting towards the Monterey Bay region during the early to mid morning hours on Friday. Precipitation should be ending for all areas by early Friday afternoon as the front passes and the atmospheric column dries. Given strong winds aloft gusts to 30+ mph are possible along and ahead of the frontal passage particularly for the higher elevations.

Saturday through Monday:

A strong low pressure system should develop over the Gulf of Alaska before advancing towards British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest by early next week. A deep plume of moisture should advect into the region by Sunday as the first Atmospheric River of the season takes aim on our area. Integrated water Vapor Transport (IVT) values are notable, and may exceed 750 m-1 s-1, suggesting the possibility for a moderate to strong event. The moisture is notably rich as precipitable water values climb to ~1.75 off the Central Coast by Sunday. While the IVT values are impressive a few caveats worth noting are 1) the associated system appears fairly progressive while moving through our area; and 2) the control runs for the IVT forecast are a bit higher than their ensemble means. That said, confidence for a widespread moderate to locally heavy rainfall event is increasing for Sunday into Monday. Details this far out remain a bit murky, but in general rain amounts of 4-6" inches are forecast for the coastal ranges (isolated higher totals are possible) with 1-3" elsewhere. Rain shadowing may reduce these totals somewhat in the Santa Clara and Salinas valleys. It's also important to note that adjustments in rain amounts (up or down) are possible as the forecast details become clearer. Keep up with forecast changes and make sure you have the most current information. With rain on the way now's a good time to take proactive measures like clearing gutters and storm drains of debris. Gusty southerly winds should also accompany this system creating hazardous marine and beach conditions while making travel potentially difficult for high profile vehicles.

Tuesday through Thursday:

Residual troughing should persist through mid-week resulting in possible periods of light rainfall. Chances may diminish somewhat by late week as upper heights briefly build ahead of the next system advancing towards the Pacific Northwest.

AVIATION. as of 10:55 AM PDT Thursday . For the 18z TAFs. An active, unsettled pattern will bring suboptimal aviation weather through the TAF period and through at least Monday, however, there should be a couple of fair VFR conditions between the weather systems.

The first of these will occur through the remainder of the daylight hours today, primarily from the Golden Gate southward. The second of these will occur in the wake of tonight's cold frontal passage, so through day tomorrow and into early Saturday. In the near term, IFR-MVFR conditions will prevail across the North Bay as a pair of boundaries merge there over the next 12 to 18 hours. VFR conditions are expected elsewhere from roughly midday through this evening, before deteriorating conditions due to an approaching cold front lowers cigs/visbys overnight and into Friday morning. Moderate to heavy rain is possible with the next frontal passage (eyeing 09Z FRI in North Bay to 14-16Z FRI in South Bay/Central Coast) along with a wind shift towards the SW-W in the wake of the front. Winds generally south/southeast and light to locally breezy, becoming light west later tomorrow. LLWS of 40 KTS at 2000 feet is also concern ahead and along the front overnight in the North Bay (see TAF). A period of VFR conditions is expected at the tail end of the TAF period, however, a strong atmospheric river will bring very poor aviation weather from Sunday into Monday.

Vicinity of KSFO . SE/S winds to 11 KTS today, increasing slightly and becoming gusty overnight, then becoming SW to W through mid to late tomorrow morning. Light rain possible through the day, but mostly finished with precipitation until tonight's cold front passes through between 09-15Z FRI. With this front, expect briefly moderate rain, lowering visibility, wet runways, IFR/MVFR cigs, and a wind shift towards the SW in the wake of the front. VFR conditions in the wake of late tonight to tomorrow morning's frontal passage before the next (and strongest) system begins to impact the area Sunday into Monday.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . VFR currently but MVFR CIGs to return ahead of incoming cold front this evening. VCSH early Friday morning with rain coming in ahead of cold front, then light rain proceeding it later in the morning. Brief IFR conditions possible Friday morning with the environment being moist which can lower visibilities with mist and light rain. Moderate winds through TAF period but could be gustier before and during frontal passage.

MARINE. as of 10:43 AM PDT Thursday . Gusty southerly winds continue in the northernmost outer waters today and tonight. Moderate rainfall returns as a secondary weaker boundary moves over the waters late tonight into Friday morning. Winds are forecast to turn to the west and weaken in the wake of the front Friday. More impactful marine weather arrives with a strong atmospheric river late in the weekend into early next week. Gale force southerly winds, very steep waves, and large swell are possible Sunday into Monday.
