Synopsis
Mild and dry weather this week. Occasionally breezy. Light precipitation chances return this weekend.
Dry and mild weather will persist through Friday as short-wave troughs pass to the north over broad ridging covering the eastern Pacific and NorCal. Precipitation chances will remain well to the north of the region across the PacNW, though occasional bouts of north to east wind are expected as surface pressure gradient tightens in the wake of each of these waves. The strongest period of northerly winds is expected tonight and Wednesday with gusts of 35-45 mph possible in the Sacramento Valley and surrounding terrain with the strongest winds forecast to occur to the northwest of Sacramento along the west side of the valley (NBM probabilities are around 60-100 percent for reaching that range for wind gusts). Difficult driving conditions can be expected and loose objects may blow around, and a Wind Advisory has been posted.
Valley high temperatures will be in the mid 70s to lower 80s.
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday)...
Models in better agreement in handling weather system for this weekend although differences continue with track and depth of low.
Associated front progged into NW portions of the CWA Friday night, then across interior NorCal Saturday. Light to moderate precipitation depicted by models with fropa along with some gusty wind. NBM showing showers possible in the foothills and mountains Sunday. WPC liquid storm total QPF forecasting around a tenth of an inch of rain in the N San Joaquin Valley to around half an inch in the N Sac Valley. Half an inch to an inch of liquid precip projected in the foothills and mountains. Light snow accumulations possible over higher elevations.
Models continue to differ into early next week. EC/NBM continuing a trend of shower possibilities over the northern and eastern foothills and mountains as additional vort maxes move through in NWly flow aloft. GFS leans towards a drier forecast with more ridging.
AVIATION
VFR conditions over interior NorCal next 24 hrs. In Central Vly, areas NWly sfc wind up to 17 kts with lcl gusts to 25 kts possible. In foothills/mtns lcl NWly sfc wind gusts up to 30 kts.
