DISCUSSION. Issued at 344 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

A quiet weather pattern continues across the region this afternoon. High pressure has moved off to the east, allowing southerly winds to return. The resulting WAA has boosted highs a bit compared to yesterday, with current temperatures in the low/mid 80s. Overnight, temperatures should only fall into the mid/upper 50s as WAA increases ahead of a strong upper trough moving through the Upper Midwest. This trough will push a weak cold front through the area tomorrow. Highs tomorrow will remain in the 80s for most of the area, though may stay in the 70s across far northern Kansas where frontal passage will occur later in the day. Along and behind the front tomorrow evening, a few sprinkles and light showers may develop within an area of mid-level frontogenesis. However plentiful dry air in the low-levels should keep any rainfall amounts to a few hundredths of an inch or less. A minor cooldown will follow for Saturday behind the front, with lows around 50 and highs around 80.

Heat quickly returns Sunday, as upper ridging builds northeast and a strong mid-level WAA pattern sets up. The mid-level thermal ridge moves over the area by Sunday PM, with 850 mb temperatures warming to 21-25 C. Plenty of sun and a decent pressure gradient will allow for deep mixing. This should support highs in the upper 80s and low 90s Sunday and Monday with little chance of precipitation. Tuesday may be a bit cooler as the upper ridging begins to break down, but will likely still see highs in the mid/upper 80s. Overnight lows throughout this period will also be warm, staying mainly in the 60s.

Towards the end of the period, a weak cutoff low over the Southwest CONUS will lift northeast Tue/Wed as it is absorbed into a developing western CONUS trough. This will allow for deep southerly flow to be established over the southern and central Plains. Moisture will steadily increase as this occurs. There is some uncertainty as to where the main axis of moisture transport sets up, and could be either over our forecast area or farther west across western Kansas. But overall, a change to wetter conditions does seem possible starting around the middle of next week. Temperatures will depend on the exact extent of precipitation and cloud cover, but will likely become closer to average values for the end of September.
