AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO 522 PM CST Tue Dec 7 2021

Discussion. Issued at 222 PM CST TUE DEC 7 2021

Key Messages:

-Dry today through Thursday.

-Chance for record highs on Friday with temps in lower 60s to lower 70s.

-Slight chance for precip in northern MO Friday afternoon/evening.

. Discussion .

A center of low pressure staying well to our north along the Iowa/Minnesota state border has kept any chances for precipitation out of our forecast area, leaving us with a dry and seasonable December day. Highs will top off in upper 30s/lower 40s across the region, dipping back below freezing overnight with morning lows in the mid to upper 20s. The upper level trough that presented the region with a bout of colder air will gradually swing farther east, allowing an upper-level shortwave ridge to slide in and briefly influence the Great Plains on Wednesday. What we can expect is clearing skies Wednesday morning with persisting dry weather Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, highs will reach into the upper 40s to lower 50s, with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s by Thursday. Deterministic models have been hinting at a strong LLJ developing over Kansas and Oklahoma early Thursday morning, moving over western Missouri by mid-morning. This jet will provide a punch of WAA into the region, aiding Thursdays highs to sit about 10 degrees warmer than Wednesday.

By late Thursday night, models continue to signal the development of an upper level trough over the western CONUS. As this trough plows farther east and over the Rockies, a leeward surface trough is projected to develop Friday morning over the Central Plains. Strong WAA at all levels will be coursing into the forecast area ahead of this developing system, pushing Friday's highs into the upper 60s to lower 70s for areas near Butler, MO and Pleasanton, KS. As this system translates into eastern KS Friday afternoon, the surface low is projected to cut through northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, leaving the forecast area into southern Iowa. What this means for our area is a chance for rain in northern and central Missouri late Friday afternoon into the evening, staying mostly dry for areas along and south of I-70. Colder temps will surge into the area behind a cold front as the low pressure center moves into the north- central Midwest. This front will peek into the northwest corner of our CWA Friday afternoon, dropping southeast until it is out of our CWA early Saturday morning. Colder temps will settle into the area Saturday with highs back in the 40. Temps will slowly climb back into the 50s and 60s into the new work week as broad upper level ridging begins to overtake the synoptic pattern for much of the central CONUS.
