Synopsis for the tidal potomac and md portion of the chesapeake bay.. High pressure shifting offshore will bring a southerly return flow beginning late tonight. An arctic front will then turn winds back to the northwest by Thursday, and may be accompanied by rain changing to snow. Low pressure lurking just off the east coast as cold high pressure anchors to the north could set the stage for another winter storm Friday into Saturday. Small craft advisories will likely be needed at times through Thursday, with near gale conditions possible as low pressure passes through early this weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 853 PM EST Tue Jan 18 2022

SYNOPSIS. High pressure shifting offshore will bring milder temperatures through the middle part of the week. An Arctic front will bring a sharp drop in temperatures starting Thursday, and may be accompanied by rain changing to snow. Low pressure lurking just off the East Coast as cold high pressure anchors to the north could set the stage for another winter storm Friday into Saturday. A very cold pattern likely continues into next week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/.

Weak high pressure will build over the area tonight. Clear skies early, but there will be increasing high clouds then mid-level clouds later tonight.

The high will shift offshore Wednesday inducing a southerly return flow and subsequently much milder temperatures well into the 40s to near 50.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/. An Arctic front will push into the region Wednesday night, crossing the region Thursday morning. Initially, temperatures should be warm enough to support rain across most of the lower elevations. However, much of the atmosphere will not be far from freezing. Colder air behind the front, with a coupled mid/upper jet should set the stage for anafrontal precipitation (where precipitation is along and behind the front, in this case in the colder air). Frontogenesis in the low levels combined with the jet aloft may result in an enhanced area of rain changing to snow during the Thursday morning commute. A coating to an inch of snow is most likely, especially on grassy surfaces given the milder temperatures initially, but a few inches are possible beneath any such band that develops.

Very cold temperatures dropping into the teens and single digits are expected late Thursday night, with a steady light wind likely remaining over the ridges where even colder temperatures are expected. Dangerously cold wind chills are possible over the higher elevations as a result. Any remaining moisture will freeze as temperatures drop.

The front will drop southward through Thursday night, setting up a volatile baroclinic zone near the Gulf Stream as Arctic high pressure builds to the north.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. A cold front that is expected to impact the region on Thursday will stall to the south on Friday and become the focus for continued precipitation over southern VA and the Carolinas. Shortwave energy originating over northwestern Canada is forecast to traverse through south central Canada and down into central U.S. Plains through the end of this week. This shortwave energy is forecast to intensify into a positively-tilted trough over the eastern Plains and Great Lakes region. The upper trough axis is currently projected to drop down into the eastern half of the U.S. Friday into Saturday. Models are disagreeing on how far south the upper trough drops into the eastern U.S. The Euro had been notably more amplified until its 12z run, with the GFS and CMC guidance trending slightly more amplified from their previous runs - this sets up a broad but still uncertain consensus. Depending on how far the trough descends southward, it could interact with the stalled boundary over the Carolinas to generate a coastal low which would track northeastward along the Eastern Seaboard. If the low tracks close enough along the coast, our region could see some decent snowfall especially considering the cold air mass that will build into the region Friday into Saturday. Some guidance has been suggesting the potential for a major snow storm affecting our region late Friday night into Saturday, but confidence remains low.

There is general agreement right now that this initial coastal low should be out of our region by Sunday but the GFS has a secondary low forming off of southern stream energy over the southern US and tracking northward near the coast on Sunday. Regardless, most long term guidance suggests further unsettled weather will be possible into early next week with a pretty cold air mass remaining in place over the region.

AVIATION /02Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. VFR conditions through Wednesday. Brief MVFR conditions Wednesday night and Thursday morning with rain and/or snow. Winds becoming south 5-10 knots tonight, then southwest 10 to 15 knots Wednesday. Winds will shift with the cold front Wednesday night to northwest 10 to 15 knots. Winds northwest 15 knots Thursday into Thursday night. Gusts 20-25 kt possible. LLWS expected late tonight into Wednesday morning.

A coastal low will bring the potential for sub-VFR conditions and possibly gusty winds late Friday into Saturday, especially near and east of the Blue Ridge.

MARINE. Sfc flow will become S through Wednesday as high pressure moves offshore. A cold front will turn winds back to the NW Wednesday night into Thursday. Small Craft Advisories may need to be extended through Wednesday night or Thursday.

A coastal low will likely pass nearby Friday into Saturday. Small Craft Advisory conditions are likely with gale conditions possible if the low is stronger and closer to the coast, but uncertainty is relatively high.
