Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 229 PM PDT Sat Sep 25 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cooling trend through early next week with shower chances late Monday into Tuesday, especially over the mountains. Breezy mountain winds possible during the afternoon hours through early next week.

DISCUSSION.

Visible satellite imagery depicts mostly clear skies with some haze from area wildfire smoke over Northern California this afternoon. Temperatures are running about 5-10 degrees cooler than this time 24 hrs ago. This is due to an approaching pacific frontal system that has flattened the ridge that was in place over the region the last few days leading to more zonal flow through the weekend as it approaches the West Coast. this increasing westerly to southwesterly flow has also given a boost to the breeze through the Delta which has been gusting around 20-25 mph for most of the day. We will likely also see the hazy conditions improve with increasing onshore flow over the region. Breezy southwesterly winds are expected over the Sierra into early next week with the strongest gusts expected in the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures are forecast to cool a little each day into next Tuesday when temperatures are forecast to cool down to 10 to 20 degrees below average for this time of year. Precipitation will also be possible Monday into Tuesday with the approaching system. Chances for precip will generally be confined to areas north of I-80 with best chances over the mountains. The central to northern Sacramento Valley may see some precip, however amounts are expected to be light with much of the central to southern Sacramento Valley seeing little to no measurable precip. EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday).

The back side of the upper level trough will be digging into Southern CA and the southern Great Basin Wednesday with weak ridging building into NorCal. This will bring an increased pressure gradient and northerly flow over the area. Winds at this point do not look too strong but gusts up to 25 mph will be possible along the west side of the Valley and over the Sierra. Ridge axis shifts through Wednesday night into Thursday as next Pacific frontal system approaches. Front weakens as it moves into the PacNW Thursday and associated precip remains north of our CWA. Weak troughing continues over the west into next weekend. High temperatures generally within a few of average throughout the period.

-CJM

AVIATION.

VFR conditions the next 24 hours at the TAF sites except for local MVFR/IFR possible for RDD after 14z Sun due to wildfire smoke. Winds generally under 12 knots except in the Delta and over the Sierra where gusts to 30 knots will be possible.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
