Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 255 PM PDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. Winds calm down overnight, but pick up again Monday afternoon as a cold front approaches the region. In addition to gusty winds, cooler temperatures move in and some light showers are possible over the start of the work week.

SHORT TERM. Tonight through Tuesday

Weather remains dry and quiet tonight, but conditions start to change tomorrow as a change in the pattern aloft takes place. Troughing moves into the Pacific Northwest, reaching deep enough to clip northern California and northwestern Nevada. A jet streak wrapping around the base of the trough helps to push stronger, gusty winds into the region, particularly in Humboldt county where gusts up to 35 mph are possible Monday afternoon. This is coupled with low RH values in the afternoon, but the air behind the cold front is fairly moist and helps to elevate RH values in the evening. Light rainfall is expected across Humboldt and Elko counties, and highest elevations in the mountains may see a light dusting of snow.

Northern Nye and White Pine counties see some chances for light rainfall as well on Tuesday, and once again highest elevations may see a few snowflakes.

Temperatures drop dramatically with highs on Monday mostly in the 80s followed by highs on Tuesday in the 50s and 60s. Overnight lows follow the same story with Monday night lows in the 30s and 40s while Tuesday night sees lows mostly below freezing.

LONG TERM. Tuesday night through next Sunday.

Cool trough axis will be shifting east of the Great Basin Tuesday night and Wednesday. Cool dry air mass follows in the troughs wake with morning lows dropping into the 20s, perhaps teens in the far northern valleys along the Owyhee river and Wildhorse Reservoir. Warming trend begins the following day and continues into the weekend as a long wave ridge covers the western CONUS. A weak disturbance may move across northern Nevada on Saturday, but confidence is low. Their is minimal influx of moisture through the long term period, sunshine generally rules each day with light winds. Mornings might be frosty into Friday morning.

AVIATION.

The sky will be hazy east of KWMC, although VFR conditions are expected to prevail. But the visibility may fall below 10SM at KBAM, KEKO, and KTPH. Gusts to 25-30kts are expected after 19Z Monday at KWMC, but not as windy for the other TAF sites.

FIRE WEATHER.

Gusty winds and low RH values ahead of a cold front on Monday lead to elevated fire weather concerns, particularly in Zone 437 where gusts are expected to be as high as 35 mph. As the front passes through Monday night, light showers are expected across northern Zones and a moist air mass fills in behind the front, helping to keep RH values elevated.

LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Red Flag Warning from noon to 8 PM PDT Monday for Humboldt County-Quinn.
