Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1051 PM PDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cooler with periods of showers and breezy winds into tomorrow morning with best precip chances over the Sierra and Southern Cascades. Breezy north to east winds are expected Tuesday into Wednesday with elevated fire weather conditions. Warming and drying trend expected into the weekend.

DISCUSSION. The Evening Update: Light showers mostly over the W Slope Sierra/Srn Cascades ahead of upper trof axis along the coast. (Lone C-G strike observed near Shingletown a little after 1900.) Trof axis forecast to swing across Norcal overnite with showers ending in our CWA by 0200-0300. Minor disturbances in the NWly flow behind the trof axis will move over Norcal on Tue, and may be associated with some high level cloudiness at times and will likely enhance NWly flow over Norcal until these disturbances move through around 00z Wed. Gusty NWly winds to 25 mph expected on Tue over most of the Valley (less in the Mother Lode due to surface friction) which will lower dewpoints during/later in the day. Winds should drop off rapidly in the evening, thus only a few hrs of moderate fire wx concerns. JHM

Previous Discussion.

Showers are being observed over far northwestern California this afternoon and are expected to spread southeastward across the region this evening and into early tomorrow morning. Breezy south to southwesterly winds are also being observed ahead of the approaching front with gusts to 24 mph reported at Redding Airport as of 1:40 PM. Elsewhere, gusts of 15 to 35 mph are being reported. Temperatures across the region are also running about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than this time yesterday. Shower chances are expected to reach interior northern California by later this afternoon and the Sierra by this evening.

Cloudy skies are expected to overspread the area today with breezy conditions expected with the frontal passage with gusts of 15 to 25 mph expected in the Valley. Breezy conditions are also forecast to persist through the Delta and over the Sierra where gusts 20 to 30 mph will be possible, locally higher over wind favored gaps and ridges in the Sierra and southern Cascades.

High resolution model guidance is in good agreement some brief embedded heavier showers could also impact the northern end of the Sacramento Valley and surrounding terrain this afternoon and evening with best chances for some stronger showers generally near the Lassen Park area. This will be a quick moving system with most of the precip chances confined to the mountains and foothills. Some precip could reach the central to northern Sacramento Valley, but amounts are expected to be light.

Dry northerly to easterly winds are expected to develop on Tuesday into Wednesday as the weather system pushes out of our area and high pressure starts to build in behind the passing trough and surface pressure gradients increase. Gusts of 15 to 30 mph will be possible across northern California on Tuesday. Lighter northerly breezes will continue Wednesday and Thursday along with warming temperatures. Highs are also forecast to trend to 5 to 10 degrees above average for this time of year with upper 80s to lower 90s likely across the Central Valley by Thursday.

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday).

Dry and quiet weather is expected for the remainder of the forecast period. Ensembles and clusters are in good agreement broad ridging over the region will dominate the weather pattern leading to slightly above average temperatures. A weak shortwave trough forecast to pass through the ridge offshore will likely cut off as it reaches northwestern California and drift south towards the southern California coast. This will help to moderate temperatures over Northern California leading to a fairly persistent forecast for the extended forecast period. Light diurnal winds will be favored with dry conditions.

AVIATION.

VFR to locally MVFR with frontal passage today. Precip possible northern Sacramento TAF sites after 23 UTC through about 6 UTC. Winds generally under 12 kts at TAF sites, expect gusts to 20 kts possible with frontal passage. Gusts 20 to 30 kts vicinity Delta and Sierra. Increasing northerly winds after 12 UTC Tuesday.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
