DISCUSSION. Issued at 315 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

Sunny and breezy/windy conditions are the rule today with temps into the 90-93 range at 19Z. Dewpoints slowly mixing out with RHs into the 20s. A weak front was pushing southeast into central portions of Nebraska in northwest upper flow over the northern Plains. Cirrus associated with an upper low over Arizona was approaching southwest Kansas.

The Nebraska front stalls north tonight into Monday, leading to a weaker pressure gradient and a weaker and more backed low-level flow and somewhat weaker mixing. Dewpoints trend up a bit in the more backed flow and the combination of weaker winds and better moisture keeps fire weather concerns muted. 850 mb temps are slightly cooler and have gone with most locations' highs a touch cooler, with all but the most extreme solutions following this idea. Despite clear skies, moderate south winds under strong low-level jet should keep tonight's lows in the upper 50s to middle 60s.

Precipitation chances are still on track to ramp up for the mid week as the southwest low pushes northeast and southerly low to mid level flow leads to an airmass much more conducive to precipitation than today. Upper forcing remains rather weak as the upper low weakens and its center remains in Colorado. Weak isentropic upglide Tuesday night into Wednesday could bring the first precip. An advancing though weakening northern Rockies trough is still progged to usher a cold front southeast into the region Wednesday night into Thursday and should still bring the greatest chances in these periods. The slow-moving nature of the front and moderately-high precipitable water levels has potential to bring some locally heavy amounts. The movement of larger-scale features beyond these periods remains quite uncertain with weak flow over the western and central states but this keeps some chance for precip into the weekend with some moisture likely still in place. Temperatures should continue to modify toward normals in this cloudier/wetter pattern though again confidence in specifics is low.
