AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 524 AM PDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Warm and dry conditions are expected across the area today today. Showers will spread into the area from the north late tonight and Friday with a few thunderstorms across the interior Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Thereafter, a series of frontal systems are forecast to impact the area Monday and again Wednesday, bringing more light to moderate rain.

DISCUSSION. Low clouds and patchy fog cover many inland valleys and portions of the coastal plain this morning. This cloudiness is expected to gradually erode after sunrise, giving way to partly to mostly sunny skies across most of the area by afternoon. Temperatures will be running around 5 degrees above normal today, leading to a very nice late October day across most of the area.

An upper disturbance and associated frontal system will drop into the area from the NW on Friday and Saturday. This feature will bring scattered showers to the N portion of the area. In addition, cooling temperatures aloft and modest dynamic forcing will bring the threat for isolated thunderstorms across portions of E Del Norte, E Humboldt, and Trinity counties Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. While rainfall amounts are expected to be generally light with this activity, higher rainfall rates are likely in any thunderstorms, especially with the fairly slow storm motions expected beneath the upper low. This may be a localized concern in and near burn scars.

Lingering shower activity on Saturday will likely dissipate quickly as large-scale subsidence occurs behind the departing upper disturbance. Mostly dry weather is anticipated Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon beneath an upper ridge. Another upper trough is forecast to move across the NE Pacific Sunday night into Monday. Frontal precipitation will spread eastward across the area and bring another round of beneficial rainfall. Height rises and ridging may occur once again on Tuesday resulting in dry weather, followed by another wet frontal passage during the middle of next week. This highly progressive regime will lead to increasing rainfall timing uncertainties later in the forecast period. /SEC

AVIATION. Low clouds and radiational fog have developed overnight across the interior valleys and coastal plain. Prevailing LIFR conditions with visibility in fog at KCEC an KUKI this morning, while IFR/MVFR with visibility in mist at KACV. Low ceilings will mostly burn off by late morning/early afternoon with the daytime heating and mixing. Otherwise, cloudiness is expected to increase during the evening ahead of a shortwave trough will drop SE into the northern California on Friday. Expect IFR/LIFR in fog and mist to return to the coastal terminals by evening, while conditions at KUKI will likely drop to IFR/MVFR with visibility in mist or fog late tonight into Friday morning. Winds remains relatively light and variable.

MARINE. A mid to long-period west swell around 10 to 13 feet is moving across the waters. Elevated seas will persist through much of the day today followed by a slowly decay by evening through Saturday. A cold front will enter the waters on Friday. The potential for strong northerlies and large, steep waves will increase over the northern waters late Friday afternoon and into Friday evening. Short period wind waves will build across the outer waters in response of the increasing winds, mainly north of Cape Mendocino. Otherwise, unsettled weather conditions on Friday may last into Saturday. Another front will approach late in the weekend, bringing a new round of southerly winds, followed by westerly swell around 10 feet by Monday.
