AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 305 PM PDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Warmer temperatures will linger through Friday as high pressure builds in. Temperatures will begin a cooling trend through the weekend as the ridge breaks down and eventually gives way to a trough by Sunday night or Monday, bringing needed rainfall and even cooler temperatures behind it.

DISCUSSION. Early afternoon visible satellite imagery revealed mostly clear skies, with only a small patch of lingering stratus fading off of Humboldt Bay. Some smoke was also seen just trying to skirt eastern Trinity County from a new fire north of Redding. Temperatures may attempt to warm more along the coast tomorrow, though the ingredients you would look for for coastal warming only partially align. The offshore flow pattern will be breaking down tomorrow while the thermal trough sits offshore only part of the day before broadening north. Should be only a quick warmup before a southerly stratus surge may bust the coastal forecast highs, as they tend to arrive earlier than anticipated. The stratus and fog will continue to have a stronger presence over the waters and coast through the weekend under persistent coastal southerly flow.

Currently, models have reflected some precipitation to near the coast from an approaching trough by early Monday morning. Ensemble guidance has been consistent with high probability of beneficial wetting rainfall, with increasing amounts from southern Humboldt County to Del Norte County. The current forecast reflects ranges from around a quarter inch to over an inch through the aforementioned areas. There may be a tight gradient of precipitation going south and eastward from those counties, quickly dropping to trace amounts, but with details still needing to be worked out. Much cooler air will come in behind an associated cold front, and some isolated frosty overnight lows. The extended pattern favors more troughing.

AVIATION. Coastal forecasts have been much less problematic with no fog or low clouds lingering along the shoreline today. A developing offshore wind flow regime will likely keep fog and low clouds very minimal tonight. Expect some shallow ground fog or haze to develop where winds go calm. A southerly wind reversal has been unfolding along the Mendocino coast today. Southerlies likely push around Cape Mendocino on Friday, resulting in higher chances for LIFR in fog at coastal forecast terminals, KACV and KCEC. VFR conditions are expected to prevail across the interior, with no impacts from smoke or haze.

MARINE. Modest northerlies will persist offshore through tonight, then ease on Friday. Southerlies will develop for the inner waters on Friday as steep short period northerly waves slowly diminish. Southerlies may be locally moderate for a short time period, gusts to 25mph, mainly around Cape Mendo. A series of small mid-period NW swells are forecast to spread into the waters through the forecast period as well. Long-range models hint at a trough deepening over the NEPAC early next week, possibly sending us a larger NW swell on Tuesday.

FIRE WEATHER. Weaker offshore northeast winds will pick up once again overnight, with some isolated gusts over 20 mph over the ridges. The southern zones of 264 and 277 are currently headlined for the resulting low RH values and locally critical fire weather conditions. RH recoveries will slowly increase through the weekend with a moistening flow, but afternoon gusty southwesterly to westerly winds will also develop, mostly in the ridges in southern of parts of zone 276,most of zone 264, and getting into zone 212. Periods of localized critical fire weather conditions may result.
