Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 148 AM PST Fri Jan 28 2022

SYNOPSIS.

Blocking high pressure will maintain dry and generally quiet weather through the end of January. Low pressure and a cold front will bring increased winds and cooler temperatures for the start of February, but the storm track looks unfavorable for bringing meaningful precipitation to the Sierra or western Nevada.

SHORT TERM.

A ridge of high pressure rebuilding overhead today then shifting to the Great Basin Saturday will keep the ongoing pattern of mild daytime temperatures with chilly nights going through the weekend. Sunday's temperatures look to edge farther upward into the 50s for far western NV.

A weak upper low off the southern CA coast will move inland across far southern CA and the southwest US through the weekend, with the ridge axis returning overhead by Sunday. The main effects of this low will be a bit more southeast wind this afternoon- evening especially south of US-50, and a swath of mid-high level clouds spreading over much of the region later today through Saturday. Unfortunately, the lower levels will remain too dry, and forcing with this low staying too far south to produce any precipitation for eastern CA-western NV. MJD

LONG TERM. Monday through next week .

The next trough will drop through Monday into Tuesday bringing another shot of colder air, a wind shift, and breezy winds for the ridges. Cluster analysis shows signals for the trough to be centered across ID/MT with most of the impacts east of the Sierra and western Nevada. Ensemble solutions do show more troughs or shortwaves swinging through the base of the main trough, but we will likely be seeing more of the same: dry, cold, and occasional east breezes for the Sierra.

As the ridge across the eastern Pacific strengthens, it will continue to block any incoming, meaningful Pacific moisture for the West Coast. What does that mean for the next 7-10 day forecast? Well, it limits us to storms that will have a continental, cold origin and produces a forecast that is stuck on repeat for the Sierra and western Nevada.

Late January into early February impacts: cooler temperatures, increased cloudiness, and some breezy north and east winds, especially along the Sierra crest. The outlook is still looking quite grim beyond the 7-10 day timeframe. Until the blocking ridge migrates elsewhere or encounters a sizable Pacific jet push, we're going to be out of the precipitation game. -Edan

AVIATION.

Blocking high pressure ridge will continue to bring a rather stagnant weather pattern to the region for today with light winds and valley inversions returning. VFR conditions for all terminals. KTRK will be the exception where patchy freezing fog may develop early in the morning.

Increasing mid to high level clouds tonight-Saturday ahead of a weak system brushing across southern CA. No precipitation is forecast through the next 7-10 days. -Edan
