Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA 128 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cool and cloudy conditions will prevail in the wake of the cold front. A few isolated rain showers can't be ruled out.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. A cool, mostly cloudy beginning to Autumn is underway across the Upper Ohio Valley and Allegheny Mountains. Area observations show temperatures have remained in the 50s since dawn thanks to abundant cloud cover and ongoing cold advection.

Overnight, temperatures will fall into the 40s for lows with a gradually clearing sky from the south as the occluded low lifts northward into Canada.

SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/. Expect quintessential beautiful Autumn weather on Friday. The large Great Lakes low pressure will continue to eject north into Ontario and Quebec. Drier air will be able to filter into the low- and mid- levels such that the sun will be able to shine and temps rise from the 40s at dawn to the 60s by afternoon. Wind will also be less than that of Thursday, with just a light westerly wind between 5 and 10mph, occasionally gusting higher.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Long range ensembles indicate that high pressure early this weekend will be followed by a cold frontal passage which will result in precip chance. Temperature should remain seasonable as we wrap up the month of September.

AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. MVFR/low VFR ceilings will prevail at most of the terminals through early evening as stratocu associated with the upper low remains entrenched across the upper ohio valley. Expect gradual improvement through the period with the cloud deck scattering out across the TAF sites south of PIT tonight as the upper low shifts northward and surface ridging builds. Further north, MVFR restrictions may linger overnight, but overall improvement to VFR is anticipated by morning everywhere.

Light wind and clear skies may lead to some patchy valley fog south of I-70 but it doesn't appear it will have impact at the terminals.

Outlook. The next restriction chance will come with a reinforcing Saturday cold front.
