Synopsis for northern california waters..Northerlies will gradually increase over the coastal waters tomorrow and really ramp up starting late tomorrow afternoon. Gusts to around 30 knots will be possible first over portions of the southern waters late tomorrow, then expand northward during Thursday. Steeper, short-period seas will build in response to these increasing winds. Otherwise, a mid-period swell will linger through much of the week.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 247 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

SYNOPSIS. Marine layer stratus will be fairly extensive and persistent through Thursday, and drizzle is possible in northwest Humboldt and Del Norte Counties tonight or Wednesday. Otherwise, high pressure will allow for mainly dry weather to prevail, with warming temperatures and more sunshine late week into the weekend.

DISCUSSION. The high pressure has pushed off to the west slightly and a warm frontal boundary moves into the Pacific Northwest. It looks like there will be a couple waves of increased rain/drizzle. The first is later tonight and the second is Wednesday afternoon and evening. This is associated with some deeper moisture and the coastal mountains may see some very light rain as well. Temperatures will remain cool in the valleys and along the coast with the cloud around.

Thursday a shortwave moves over the ridge, although this isn't expected have much moisture with it. It could still bring low clouds and drizzle. Temperatures will start to warm with less cloud cover likely by the afternoon.

Friday and Saturday high pressure builds in and northerly winds develop along the coast. Overnight offshore flow will keep the coasts mainly clear. High temperatures will warm into the upper 60s in the southern interior with slightly cooler temperatures farther north. Monday the ridge starts to push off to the west again and this could bring cooler temperatures. MKK

AVIATION. A low pressure system moving ashore around British Columbia is bringing moisture to the region. Low clouds are projected to be of concern at the coastal terminals by this afternoon. VFR conditions will persist at the coast until cloud ceilings drop. Drizzle or light rain is possible around the Del Norte and Humboldt coast by this evening. After the low clouds roll in around the coast, MVFR to IFR conditions are expected. Low clouds and fog are possible across interior valleys around sunrise. VFR conditions should persist at Ukiah, unless fog does develop.

MARINE. A high pressure system in the Northeast Pacific will be briefly interrupted as a strong low pressure system moves eastward into British Columbia. However, after the low pressure system makes landfall by early Thursday morning, the high pressure system will redevelop and become a dominant aspect off the Pacific Northwest coast. As the high moves eastward throughout Thursday, northerlies will increase across the southern outer waters where near gale gusts are expected. By Friday, the strong northerlies will spread throughout all the coastal waters. Starting early Saturday morning, winds will weaken as a low pressure system develops along the coast.

Wave heights will continue to decline throughout Wednesday. However, a long period westerly swell will move into the coastal waters by Wednesday night, peaking by early Friday morning before subsiding. Also, strong northerly wind waves will accompany the long period swell. As a result, by Thursday morning, wave heights will begin to increase. Wave heights will peak by Friday afternoon before declining again. Wave heights in the outer coastal waters could reach 10 to 13 feet.
