AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Hastings NE 648 PM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021
. AVIATION AND CLIMATE UPDATE .
DISCUSSION. (This evening through Monday) Issued at 205 PM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021
No significant changes to the previous forecast this afternoon as things still appear be on track with another unseasonably warm day Tuesday ahead of an upper level low expected to reach the area Tuesday night . followed by unsettled weather and cooler temperatures returning with a cold front Wednesday evening through Thursday.
Another unseasonably warm early fall afternoon is being observed across the local area today as temperatures have climbed into the lower to mid 90s across the majority of the forecast area. Still have about 1-2 hours of time to reach record highs . which now appears likely as both GRI and HSI have reached 92F as of 2 PM CDT As the sun sets this evening. expect another steady drop in temperatures as light winds . clear skies and low dewpoints will combine to help temperatures drop into the 50s to start the day Tuesday . and correspondingly lowered overnight lows tonight by a couple of degrees.
As the aforementioned upper level low transitions out of the desert southwest and into the plains on Tuesday . expect increasing cloud cover to help temper afternoon highs a few degrees . but given little change in the underlying airmass . another hot day with temperatures near or above 90 degrees is anticipated and bumped afternoon highs a couple of degrees. While initially inherited some small chances for thunderstorms late Tuesday afternoon . per coordination with neighboring offices and latest model data . pushed these chances into the evening and overnight hours. While CAMS are not indicating widespread coverage . continue to think isolated to scattered thunderstorm activity will be possible with the upper level low Tuesday night into Wednesday as it crosses the local area.
With lingering clouds and some showers around during the daytime hours on Wednesday . expect a slightly cooler, but still warm afternoon . as the main cold front is not expect until the Wednesday evening through Thursday morning time frame. The bulk of precipitation over the next 7 days is expected with this front . bringing a widespread potential for 1-2 inches of rainfall across the local area by the end of the day Thursday. With the front will also come seasonably cool temperatures . with afternoon highs expected to be in the upper 60s to near 70 for the remainder of the forecast period . which is generally 3-5 degrees below seasonal norms for early October. While there are continued chances for precipitation nearly every forecast period through the upcoming weekend behind Thursdays front . this will eventually need some refinement as precipitation chances will depend on where the front stalls and subsequent upper level waves . and it likely won't end up being a continuous period of wet weather across the local area.

..Regarding Record/Near Record High Temperatures at Grand Island/Hastings (our two primary climate records sites)..
TODAY (Monday/Sep. 27): Temperatures again soared just a TOUCH higher than expected today most areas. This allowed Hastings to break a daily high temperature record for the 2nd-straight day (Grand Island fell 1 degree short of its record):
- Hastings: new record 94 (previous 93 in 1956)
TUESDAY (Sep. 28): Thanks to very slightly "cooler" forecast temperatures and slightly higher existing records, we are currently NOT anticipating a third-straight day of records:
