AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 256 PM PDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cold front will continue to sweep across the area this evening. Rains will become more showery overnight, with a slight chance of a thunderstorm near the Del Norte County coast. Below normal temperatures are expected through Tuesday, with a return to near to above normal temperatures later in the week. Frost is possible in some interior valleys Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

DISCUSSION. Light pre-frontal rain spread across portions of the area early this morning, with heavier and more persistent rain along a cold front sweeping into the area late this morning and this afternoon. The more widespread rains will continue to push ESE this evening with more showery precipitation behind the front. Models continue to indicate modest instability over the N coastal waters mainly this evening. Have continued to indicate a slight chance of thunderstorms in that area. In addition, due to NE storm motion, have expanded these thunderstorms to clip the immediate Del Norte coast before dynamic and thermodynamic support lifts NE.

Cooler temperatures will accompany the front. There is still the potential for patchy frost late tonight, mostly across the S interior valleys where rain and clouds will be less plentiful. A few patches of frost are also possible farther N in SE Trinity County valleys, but there is much more uncertainty in those areas. There is a better chance for frost Wednesday morning.

Temperatures are expected to rebound late in the week, with afternoon highs 5 to 10 degrees above normal across the interior by late in the work week. /SEC

AVIATION. IFR/LIFR pre-frontal conditions persisted over the coastal terminals and occasional MVFR-IFR over some inland valleys through morning. Between 11 AM and 1 PM, a cold front moved over the North Coast . starting in far northern Del Norte. At noon, gusty SSW winds associated with the front moved over ACV and Humboldt Bay; ACV briefly dropped to LIFR conditions. Rain will taper through late afternoon and this evening, but scattered showers will move ashore this evening . and even an isolated thunderstorm may slide onto the Redwood Coast in the evening. /TA

MARINE. Southwesterly winds around 5 to 12 kts has developed across the waters as a frontal system moves onshore. Winds should stay light across the northern waters while northerlies slowly return south of Cape Mendocino late tonight, spreading to all waters and accelerating by Tuesday afternoon. The current NW swell continues to decay through this evening, with a larger NW swell forecast to arrive this evening and tonight. The larger NW swell is expected to build quickly to 12 to 14 foot and persist through late Tuesday afternoon then slowly decay through Wednesday. Small Craft Advisories are in place for all waters for this evening through late Tuesday night. Seas possibly build again late this work week and this weekend. Stronger northerlies are expected to develops across the outer waters late in the week while the decaying NW swell is reinforced.

FIRE WEATHER. Ridgetop SW to W winds across our S interior ridges will become gusty this afternoon and evening, but RH values will be high. Locally poor recoveries are anticipated across the southern ridges by the latter half of the week. Gusty N to NE winds across the ridgetops of Lake County late Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but RH values are forecast to recover to around 40 percent across these areas. /SEC

EKA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . Frost Advisory from 2 AM to 9 AM Tuesday for CAZ110-111-114.
